Ford Gets Downright ‘Sinister’ With Its Sportiest SUV

Ford created a tidy little niche for itself when it introduced an ST version of the Explorer family SUV. Higher performance, courtesy of a trim-exclusive twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6, has proven to be quite a draw for Blue Oval customers; just last year, the ST represented more than one in five Explorer sales, with customers drawn in by the SUV’s rear-drive dynamic balance and 400 boosted horses. Keen to capitalize on that momentum is a new special edition for 2027, called the Sinister Package. As you might guess, it’s a styling pack that subs in some black accents, making it a great ride for when Darth Vader has weekends with twin babies Luke and Leia.

    Dark Finishes Inside And Out

The 2027 Ford Explorer ST Sinister Package features a “custom-inspired aesthetic” with its darkened finishes, starting with standard 21-inch black alloy wheels mounted to Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires. Although they’re the same size as the base ST’s wheels, the Sinister Package gets a unique design to go with the inky, glossy finish.

Since the hot-rod Explorer already makes abundant use of black accents – a polished exhaust system and blue-and-chrome oval logos are just about the only brightwork to be seen – Ford had to get a little more creative to set the Sinister apart from its siblings. The ST badges have been subtly redesigned with a black stroke around the red lettering. A black and white Ford logo lives on the grille and rear hatch for a monochromatic appearance.

Meanwhile, perhaps in a nod to the often-imitated Raptor’s amber clearance lights, the Explorer ST Sinister also gets orange DRLs atop the headlights. Changes inside are even more minimal, with only a dark-finished set of Ford Racing door sills betraying its provenance.

ST isn’t well-defined, but it sure is sweet.

    It’s Training Day

Ford’s biggest news in announcing the Sinister Package arguably has nothing to do with the car at all. The automaker announced that it would bring back its Explorer ST Experience for the owners of all 2026 and 2027 models, giving them a complimentary one-day performance driver education experience so they can learn how to whip their new three-row SUVs around a cone course most effectively.

The Explorer ST Experience was last offered in 2025, but the program was suspended sometime in the past year, with 2026 owners wondering if they’d missed their shot. It’s clear, now, that they have not. The 2027 Ford Explorer ST Sinister Package goes on sale as you read this, with customer deliveries anticipated sometime by the end of 2026.

It’s fashionable, functional, and probably even fast.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

Black appearance packages run under a few different names, depending on the manufacturer. For example, Nissan sells Midnight Edition versions of its cars, a name also used by Chevrolet for vehicles with, gloss black instead of chrome, trim. Honda’s “Blackout” version of the Passport features several port-installed accessories to reduce its exterior brightwork as much as possible, including dark H badges front and rear. Toyota uses the word “Nightshade” to describe cars running with a darkened interior and exterior aesthetic, which is available in most of the company’s larger cars and crossovers, including the Camry, Prius, Grand Highlander, and Crown sedan.

Whatever the name, they all generally follow the same formula: gloss black wheels, emblems, sideview mirrors, grille and window surrounds, roof racks, et al. Whether installed at the factory, the distribution center, or the dealership, such packages are very popular with customers, allowing automakers and retailers to sell cars more quickly and for higher average transaction prices than conventional bright-finished models.

Although the Explorer ST Sinister Package doesn’t expand the envelope too far – the performance SUV doesn’t have much chrome to lose in the first place – it shows that Ford wants to keep its customers happy by giving them the little details they didn’t know they wanted until they saw them on the showroom floor.
