There used to be a time when, if you wanted to have fun, you’d have to have a garage big enough for two cars. One would be a dependable family car for the commute to work, while the other would be tucked away for clear weekend skies. There’s a whole host of sports cars that try to combine both of those elements into the same vehicle, such as the Porsche 911 or Toyota GR86, to varying degrees of success.
But a daily sports car can’t just be fun – it also has to be something you can rely upon not to leave you stranded. We’ve collected a list of our favorite sports cars that are built to withstand mundane daily driving and a Sunday blast. A lot of us car lovers aspire to these cars when we’re young, so it’s usually best to get something that we don’t have to make excuses for.
Our definition of sports car is a vehicle that has been built from the ground up to be a performance vehicle, not just a high-performance version of an existing mainstream car. This list of most reliable sports cars is arranged in no particular order, and your mileage may vary with these vehicles. Always do your due diligence when buying a used vehicle.

We kick of this list of most reliable sports car models with a classic German roadster. When it comes to modern engines, there’s not much to fault the B58 3.0L turbo straight-six on. It’s used in pretty much every BMW product, and even though the Z4 may now be out of production, it’s probably the purest way of enjoying this powerplant to the maximum (especially with the manual transmission). Small issues can arise with the cooling system and gaskets under sustained loads, although the forged internal components and relatively simple design make it a great choice for tuning. JD Power rates the most recent model at 85 out of 100 for quality and reliability.

After Porsche’s reliability woes with its first water-cooled 911s in the early 2000s, the 2009-2013 911 model years (codenamed the 997.2 generation) fixed many of the common pitfalls that owners faced. JD Power scores the 2012 models an impressive 87 out of 100 overall for consumer satisfaction. The removal of the troublesome IMS bearing did most of the work, and the Mezger engine was retained for the Turbo and GT models. Being a bigger car than the 996, there’s more cabin space and, thanks to the rear-engine design, you can get kids into the tiny rear seats. If anything, it’s a great place for bags.

You don’t become the best-selling roadster in history for nothing – and one of the best sports car models for reliability. The latest Mazda MX-5 continues the simple philosophy of Miata models of old with a simple rear-drive layout and a manual ‘box. There are few recalls listed on the NHTSA website, and its simple engine means repairs are super costly. Importantly for a daily driver, fuel mileage is decent at around 30 mpg, and top trims get heated seats, Bose speakers, and Nappa leather to make every drive feel more premium.
The most recent models aren’t rated by JD Power, but the car is known for 80s and above over the years. Being on sale for this long means many of the issues are ironed out – and used models are iconic for being some of the most reliable sport cars under $30,000.

It’s hard to make a reliability list without a Toyota showing up somewhere, so it’s no surprise that Toyota’s dependable sports car shows up here. The 86 was co-created with Subaru as a back-to-basics RWD sports car featuring a boxer engine. It’s known for its relative practicality compared to other sports cars, and while the engine can suffer from excessive oil consumption sometimes, it’s known to be a strong choice when properly maintained. Keep in mind that the lower entry price for this car means many will have been abused, so get an inspection and a stack of service history with your purchase. JD Power consistently rates the Subaru BRZ well in its overall ratings, with the Scion scoring 83 out of 100 in 2016.

You might be surprised to find an Aston Martin on this list, but the V8 Vantage from 2009 is a surprisingly strong choice. The 4.7L engine that came out to replace the aging 4.3L unit shares many parts with Ford and Jaguar, and it can be specced in either manual or automatic. The latter is known for being a victim of clutch wear, which is an issue with many early automated manuals. Make sure that, as well as any oil leaks, have been looked at prior to purchase. Still, it’s one of the best-looking daily drivers on this list by a mile.

While the latest Boxster/Cayman is the obvious choice, the 987.2 generation, which ran from 2009–2012, is known for pure driving dynamics and a strong powertrain. The bore-scoring issues, IMS bearing catastrophe, and oil starvation problems were all solved over previous Caymans, making this generation a true example of sports cars that last. We’ve regularly found these cars on forums with over 200,000 miles thanks to routine maintenance and care. Being a Porsche, parts can be pricey, but don’t expect to be stranded on the highway. JD Power ranks later models at 90 out of 100 for quality and reliability, some of the highest scores on this list.

There’s probably not a car from this era that has aged quite as well as the Audi R8. It’s relatively affordable to buy (at least, for a halo mid-engined car…), with prices starting at around $60k, and the 4.2L V8 engine is an Audi high point. Replacement parts can be pricey, as with any car like this, and the magnetic ride dampers are notorious. These cost around $1,000 each, so check the service history for any suspicious quirks. There’s a relatively decent frunk here, and the interior is known for its usual great 2000s Audi quality.

The Nissan GTR is a highly-strung sports car that’s legendary for daily driving, but there’s so much tech that it’s expensive when it goes wrong. The 370z, then, feels like the simpler choice, and its VQ37VHR V6 engine is known for robust miles. The two big issues to watch out for are clutch slave cylinders and steering locks, so any evidence of replacement is key here. Being on sale for so many years without changes means the interior feels a bit outdated, but it’ll be more fun to drive to work in than your neighbor’s Camry. The F20C engine in the Honda S2000 is built to withstand high rpms and spirited driving, so, naturally, it’s more robust than your average powertrain. As with many Japanese cars, watch out for rust, as panels can be expensive to replace given the car’s rarity and age. When buying a higher-mileage example, check the timing chain tensioner and if it’s been replaced, as this can mean kaput for your engine if not fixed. Oil consumption is pretty common on these cars, so it’s no biggie if it burns a little.
