The 2027 models for both the BMW X5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLE have been revealed. These two high-end family SUVs have plenty to offer on all fronts: from comfort to tech, performance and everything in between.

Both the X5 and the GLE have gone through some changes this year; the BMW in a more radical way than the Mercedes, as 2027 marks the start of a new generation. Each has plenty to offer in terms of powertrain options and state-of-the-art tech features. Let’s take a look at all the exciting things 2027 is bringing for these two models, and which one we think is the best choice.

Design, Powertrain, And Features: A New Generation Vs. A Facelift

The new X5 connects the design language of previous X models with that of the futuristic Neue Klasse architecture, incorporating several crucial updates while remaining unmistakably a member of the X family. The front end is taller for a more imposing stance; the design of the front end varies according to powertrain, with the all-electric iX5 featuring a cleaner, minimalistic look in the absence of the horizontal air intakes.

The kidney grille has been drastically reduced in size and given an illuminated border, which BMW refers to as Iconic Glow. The headlights have also had a radical makeover, and now sport a unique double X shape. The rear of the vehicle continues the similar strong, imposing stance seen in the front, with flared wheel arches, a body-colored bumper, and matte black trim.

In terms of powertrain, there is a wide variety of options in the pipeline; however, most of them aren’t available just yet. The model’s launch is set to begin in October this year with the X5 40 xDrive, powered by an updated version of the B58 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine. It produces 394 hp and 428 lb-ft, gets from 0-60 in 5.1 seconds, and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

Early 2027 will bring more models to the lineup, including the RWD version of the X5 40, the PHEV X5 50e xDrive (which pairs the B58 with one electric motor for a total output of 483 hp and 516 lb-ft), and the iX5 60 xDrive, the first all-electric version. Later in the year, a V8-powered M Performance version will also be introduced. There’s also a hydrogen fuel cell version of the iX5 in the pipeline, though it will take a little longer to reach the market.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE has also gone through some design changes for the 2027 model year, but they’re not quite as dramatic, as this year marks a facelift rather than the start of a new generation. The front bumper has been reworked to bring the vehicle in line with Mercedes’ updated design language, giving it a sophisticated yet rugged feel. The headlights have been updated, with an elegant twin star motif and a black panel that integrates them with the radiator grille.

They are also equipped with the Digital Light system, which instantly adapts to the driving situation to increase energy efficiency and lighting field. The Mercedes-Benz star is surrounded by a chrome frame, which can be illuminated as an optional feature. The side mirrors feature an updated design and a black high-gloss base. At the rear of the car, the taillights feature three-dimensional, chrome-framed star elements, as well as a trim element that visually connects them to make the vehicle appear larger.

The GLE comes in a variety of trims and powertrain options. We start with the 350 4MATIC, powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that produces 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Next, the 450 4MATIC sports a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that produces 375 hp and has been updated for this model year to produce more torque (413 lb-ft). These upgrades include a new cylinder head, modified intake camshaft, and new electric auxiliary compression.

The 500e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid follows, pairing the inline-six engine with an electric motor for a total output of 429 hp and 502 lb-ft. This model features around 65 miles of all-electric range. The most powerful model in the lineup is the V8-powered 580 4MATIC, whose 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 produces 530 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.

    Interior, Comfort, And Tech

    2027 BMW iX5 60 xDriveBMW

The BMW X5’s interior is more luxurious and high-tech than ever, with an abundance of high-quality materials (including slate, used in this model for the first time) giving the cabin a premium feel. The Clear & Bold option pairs slate with crystal glass elements, to create a visually appealing design that’s both resilient and classy. Glass is used in elements such as dials and knobs to elevate the look. Black gloss decorative surfaces are standard, and X quilting on the door panels is available to create a three-dimensional look.

There are countless features on board that make each journey as comfortable as possible for both driver and passengers. The center console features two USB-C ports to keep devices charged while on the move, as well as two cupholders and an Alcantara magnetic smartphone tray with wireless charging. Other key comfort features include four-zone climate control and a panoramic glass sunroof.

Heated sports seats are offered as standard; BMW has added more cushioning, as well as more knee room in the rear seats (thanks to the longer wheelbase) for improved comfort. Additional functions, such as ventilation and massage, are available as optional extras. There is one crucial difference between the 2027 X5 and its predecessors: the three-row option is no longer available, much to the disappointment of prospective buyers who need room for additional passengers.

When it comes to infotainment tech, BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system runs the show, connecting various displays and controls to build a system that extends beyond a traditional display. BMW Panoramic Vision projects content across the entire lower windshield, while the 3D Head-Up Display is located just above it. A 17.9-inch touchscreen and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant allow the user to interact with the system through both touch and voice. There’s also an optional Passenger Screen, to allow access to entertainment content for the front passenger. A Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system completes the picture.

    2027 Mercedes-Benz GLEMercedes-Benz

Over in the Mercedes camp, the GLE comes with a few new comfort features and trim elements. Creating a welcoming environment was the top priority for Mercedes’ designers, who integrated ambient lighting into the cabin and redesigned the air vents with a gentler, rounded shape, among other changes. Welcome animations, color schemes, and background motifs set the mood from the moment you step into the cabin, and can be personalized according to your individual preferences.

The standard seats feature a new upholstery design and moccasin stitching; you can also opt for AMG Line sports seats through the AMG Line package. Like its BMW competitor, the model offers a panoramic powered sunroof as standard. Unlike the X5, however, the Mercedes does offer an optional third row of seats, which can be accessed at the touch of a button via the power easy-entry function.

    2027 Mercedes-Benz GLEMercedes-Benz

The infotainment system is controlled by the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), an advanced system that uses AI and is connected to the cloud for over-the-air updates. This allows the vehicle to stay up to date, as well as allowing the user to customize their vehicle with apps and features. The MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Interface) Superscreen is made up of three 12.3-inch displays brought together by a seamless glass surface. Unlike in the BMW, the front passenger screen is offered as standard. A 3D instrument cluster is optional, as is the Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (available on this model for the first time). The MBUX also incorporates an AI-powered virtual assistant, which includes technology from Microsoft, Google, and ChatGPT.

    Price And Winner

    2027 BMW X5 ExteriorBrett T. Evans/CarBuzz/Valnet

The BMW X5 40 xDrive, the first version of the 2027 X5 to hit the market, has a starting price of $72,100 plus $1,450 destination charge. Although we do not yet have an exact figure for the GLE, we expect it to have a similar starting price.

The competition between these two models is a very close one. Both have some extremely strong selling points for a driver seeking a practical but luxurious SUV. However, we think the best option in this particular instance is most likely the X5.

The X5 appears to be all-new, but it still rides on the outgoing CLAR platform. That’s a good thing, because the outgoing X5 remained a class leader right until the end. The new car is still built on that outgoing platform, but offers so much more. We see no reason why the new car won’t take up the mantle as the new class leader.
