Volvo EX50 Could Replace EX40 in the U.S. as a Bigger and More Affordable Entry EV : Automotive Addicts

Volvo appears to be reshuffling its entry-level electric SUV strategy for the U.S., and the upcoming EX50 could be the model that finally gives the brand a stronger shot at the sweet spot of the premium EV market. According to Automotive News, the EX50 is expected to replace the EX40 in the United States for the 2027 model year, arriving as a taller, longer, and more affordable compact crossover. That matters because the current EX40 starts at $56,545 with shipping, while the EX50 is reportedly expected to land in the high $40,000s.

That pricing shift could be the most important part of the story. Volvo has had attractive EVs in the lineup, but price and positioning have made it difficult to fully challenge vehicles from Tesla and other growing EV rivals. A larger crossover priced under the EX40 would give Volvo a cleaner entry point for shoppers who want premium design, Scandinavian restraint, and electric driving without stepping into a larger and more expensive model.

The EX50 is reportedly being developed on Volvo’s new SPA3 platform under the internal code name V326. Production is scheduled to begin in spring 2027 at Volvo’s new $1.25 billion factory in Kosice, Slovakia, which is designed for an annual capacity of up to 250,000 vehicles. AutoForecast Solutions estimates full-year EX50 production at about 90,000 units, although U.S. allocation could depend on how strongly Volvo prioritizes Europe once production gets underway.

For the U.S. market, Volvo is reportedly targeting first-year sales of up to 10,000 units, though that number could shift depending on production priorities. The EX50 is also expected to be offered in Canada, but it remains unclear whether the EX40 will be discontinued there as it reportedly will be in the U.S. If the plan holds, the EX50 would become Volvo’s new entry electric crossover here while giving the brand a little more size and value than the outgoing EX40.

The EX50 is also only one piece of a broader Volvo product push. The brand is said to have several mostly battery-powered models headed toward U.S. showrooms, including a full-size three-row hybrid flagship in early 2029 and possibly a midsize electric sedan and wagon in late 2028. For Volvo, the EX50 may be the volume play that helps reset expectations. If it arrives with the right range, charging speed, safety tech, and interior execution, it could become the practical premium EV crossover Volvo needs to bring more shoppers into its electric lineup.
