As you might know, Ford skipped the USA when it built the second-generation Focus ST, famous for its amazing turbocharged five-cylinder engine. We only received the generation after that, but it was one cylinder down.

But did you know it actually found its way over here, using the same chassis and engine, but wearing a different badge. This overlooked hatchback can deliver an experience that many hot hatch enthusiasts know little about, with its turbocharged five-cylinder engine, distinctive Scandinavian design, and fun driving dynamics.

An Unusual Hot Hatch With That Special Swedish Flair

The Volvo C30, as a model range, came into being in 2006 and lasted until 2013. This was Volvo’s attempt to enter the premium compact hatchback market and compete with others, including the Mini Cooper S and the Audi A3 Hatchback. However, this car brought a distinctive Scandinavian flair to the often-predictable segment.

Some of the C30 features included a premium sound system by Dynaudio, while Bluetooth connectivity and navigation appeared in later models. Of course, every car has some of Volvo’s renowned safety features, including advanced airbags (for their time), an ultra-strong safety cage, and side impact protection.

Sadly, Volvo discontinued sales in the US in 2013 as the company started to shift its focus towards SUVs and larger sedans. Some argue that the C30 did not have the practicality of its direct four-door competitors, such as the Audi A3 and Golf GTI. It was also quite difficult to access the rear seat, which may have made it a tough sell for some buyers.

The 5-Cylinder Engine That Stole the Show

Look under the hood, and you’ll see why the C30 T5 is special. It’s got a 2.5-liter turbocharged, 5-cylinder inline engine, which gives you 236 lbs./ft of torque and 227 hp. This powerplant is one of the industry’s finest and has found its way into other vehicles, such as the S40 T5 and V50 T5 from Volvo. As mentioned, this was the engine that Ford fitted to the Mk 2 Focus RS and Focus ST, and those were some of the most beloved hot hatches in Europe.

The engine exhaust note sounds different as well, and distinct from the typical turbocharged four-cylinder hot hatch. Its five-cylinder turbocharged engine gives you plenty of smooth power and a lot of torque at low revs, which makes it a joy to drive both in town and on the highway.

Volvo also came out with a special limited-edition version of the C30 T5 in 2012, called the Polestar. This had a Polestar ECU tune which pushed the power up to 250 hp and 273 lbs./ft of torque. It also had exclusive Rebel Blue paint, upgraded brakes, and a sportier suspension system. All told, this made the C30 Polestar Limited Edition one of the most exciting models that Volvo has ever produced.

Yes, the C30 T5 Also Came in a Manual, Which is the One to Get

Volvos are synonymous with automatic transmissions, but in this case, the company also fitted a six-speed manual transmission to some vehicles in the US. This move gave enthusiasts the chance to drive like a purist in this underrated hatchback.

When on the road, the six-speed manual provides quicker acceleration and a driving experience that feels more “connected.” It seems to use more of the 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder than does the five-speed automatic. The motor also has plenty of available torque at low revs, so you can certainly make the most of the vehicle’s power band. And don’t forget that manual versions are like hen’s teeth, which gives them collector status and makes them highly desirable among enthusiasts.

Of course, if you find one of these cars and want to modify it, you’ll be able to get a number of performance upgrades, bigger turbos, and the like, when you have a manual transmission in place.

Why Performance and Handling Characteristics Make This a Fun Drive in Disguise

    Volvo

The Volvo C30 T5 comes in FWD, and no AWD was ever available. It has sport-tuned suspension and a strong turbocharged engine. Out-of-the-box, it’s an enjoyable drive but even better if you can find one with the R-design package. This version has stiffer suspension, sharper handling, and additional, sporty styling addenda.

On the road, the steering feels quite accurate, and the turbocharged five-cylinder engine has a strong mid-range punch. It may not be quite as dramatic as a Focus ST, but it nevertheless provides a cool driving experience.

Look for after-market providers to give you even more C30 T5 excitement. You may be able to significantly increase the power output through a simple ECU tune or could even fit a bigger intercooler or exhaust.

The C30 T5 is also a performance bargain at under $10,000, which makes it an affordable and competitive package. According to Kelley Blue Book, used prices for one of the 2013 model-year derivatives range from just under $9,000 to $13,000, a good place to be for budget-conscious enthusiasts. Compare its cost to other serious hot hatches, and you’ll see that the C30 T5 stands up very well. It’s certainly a rare and rather unique alternative.

Unusual Design, Not Like a Volvo at All

Take a first look at the C30 T5 and you will agree that it has a striking design. It’s not like the traditional boxy Volvos but has curved lines and a lower stance instead, with that distinctive, strong Volvo shoulder line, and a unique glass rear hatch, of course. Many of these design cues were not random but were, in fact, a reference to the classic Volvo P1800 ES, one of the manufacturer’s early and iconic creations.

Beyond the sporty and compact design, you’ll still find the kind of comfort and practicality that have made Volvo what it is today. The car has a well-built interior with high-quality materials throughout and a signature “floating” center console. The dashboard itself is minimalist and helps to give the vehicle a premium feel.

Don’t be surprised if you’ve never heard of this vehicle as it didn’t sell in huge numbers in the US. However, it does have a cult following among enthusiasts who love its premium build quality, unique design, and underrated performance.
