Not having to spend a fortune on a vehicle is often the biggest drawcard to the compact and subcompact car segment, but the advantages of better fuel efficiency and a small footprint shouldn’t be underestimated.
Kia continues to prove that buying a small car doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style, tech, safety, or even driving fun: there’s something for everyone in the Kia small car lineup right now, from efficient hybrids to affordable EVs, and potent plug-ins that give you the best of both worlds. And within the next few months, the entire Kia small car lineup will start at under $30,000.
This list comprises all the small Kia cars on sale in 2026 from the subcompact and compact segments. We list them from cheapest to most expensive, based on starting MSRP, which is correct at the time of writing.
Under $25,000: The Cheapest Kia Cars Right Now
2026 Kia K4 Sedan: $22,290
The cheapest car Kia has on offer right now is the 2026 Kia K4 four-door, a sleek and stylish sedan that goes up against segment stalwarts like the Mazda 3 and Honda Civic. For the current model year, there are five trims to choose from, starting at $22,290 before options and destination, with the most expensive model asking for $28,390.
Base models use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, sending power to the front wheels through a CVT. The GT-Line Turbo models that top the Kia compact car range get a little more oomph courtesy of a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine that makes 190 hp and 195 lb-ft. While FWD is the only option, the sportier trims get an eight-speed automatic and multi-link rear suspension that helps it feel more competent in spirited driving. Still, it’s not a full-fat sport sedan, with rivals out-performing it in terms of driving enjoyment.
The bonus of the small-car-unhurried-engine combination is that you get great fuel efficiency, with the entry-level engine scoring 29/39/33 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles, while the turbo models get 26/33/28 mpg.
2026 Kia K4 Hatchback: $24,990
The sexier version of the K4 (at least in our opinion) is one of the few remaining hatchbacks in the USA. The K4 Hatchback is a little more expensive to start, but still comes in under $25k before adding destination, and is available in just three trims that match the sedan lineup in terms of engines, features, and comfort levels. Some differences between the sedan and hatchback can be seen in the fuel economy ratings, with the hatch being slightly more thirsty. The 2.0-liter trims get 28/34/30 mpg, and the turbocharged version drops to 26/33/28 mpg.

$25,000: The Subcompact SUV Star
2027 Kia Seltos: $24,990
New for 2027, the Kia Seltos is the brand’s smallest SUV that now looks more mature than ever before. Kia has put considerable effort into making the Seltos more refined and feature-laden, and the improvements over the outgoing model year are significant in this second-generation car. There’s even a Seltos Hybrid waiting in the wings, but that’s not officially on sale yet.
For now, buyers need only spend $24,990 for the base model, which comes with the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 1.6-liter turbo offered in the K4 lineup, with either 147 hp or 190 hp, respectively. Here, however, FWD is standard on entry-spec models, while AWD becomes an option and is the default higher up in the range.
Being a subcompact, there’s only space for five inside the new Seltos, and given its budget pricing, the lower-tier models are suitably equipped with cloth upholstery and only the basic feature count. Still, that includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED exterior lighting, air-conditioning, and ADAS basics like forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure, lane keep, and lane following assist, as well as smart cruise control.
The most expensive models cost upward of $33,000 and get the punchier engine, panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, heated seats, faux leather upholstery, and a few more standard driver assists.
Under $29,000: The SUV With The Most Variety
2027 Kia Sportage: MSRP $28,990
The 2027 Kia Sportage lineup is the most diverse on this list, as you can buy a new one with a standard combustion engine, as a standard hybrid, or as a plug-in hybrid, and the cheapest models still cost less than $30,000. That honor belongs to the ICE Sportage, which is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine in all six trims, good for 184 hp and 178 lb-ft. AWD is available and an eight-speed auto does duty. But if the 25/33/28 mpg figures aren’t good enough for you, the Sportage Hybrid offers some respite.
Hybrids get a 1.6-liter turbo hybrid setup with 232 hp for all five trims – pricing is slightly higher at $30,590 for the entry-level, but fuel economy improves to 40/42/41 mpg with FWD, and 35/36/35 mpg with AWD. The hybrid lineup misses out on the X-Pro Prestige trim, however, which has 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, and a Terrain Mode for going off the beaten path.

Topping the Sportage lineup is the Sportage Plug-In Hybrid, which brings 268-hp and 271 lb-ft to the compact Kia SUV, but asks a steeper price at $40,590 for the cheaper of just two models. The most expensive Sportage is the X-Line Prestige PHEV, kitted out with everything from heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and Harman Kardon sound to a head-up display, 12.3-inch touchscreen display with navigation, and 12.3-inch digital cluster. All plug-ins have an EPA-estimated MPGe figure of 83, an all-electric range of 34 miles, and manage 36 mpg combined when the battery is depleted. The Sportage is an excellent value-for-money buy, even against bigger options in the stable.
Under $30,000: The Newest Small Kia Car
2027 Kia EV3: MSRP $29,890
The newest Kia small car on sale right now is the 2027 Kia EV3, which replaces the Niro EV in the stable. The entry-level model has a sticker price of $29,890 and topping the five-trim range is a GT model that asks for $45,890. There are three powertrain options to choose from, with the single-motor variant making 201 hp, a dual-motor model offering 261 hp, and the GT’s 288-hp dual-motor setup being the most potent. You can also choose from two battery packs, a standard 58.3 kWh or a larger 81.4 kWh unit.
Kia says range varies from 221 miles on base trims to 280 miles for AWD dual-motor models – the dual-motor FWD trims are most efficient, and can achieve 321 miles on a single charge. Charging is quick, too, with under 30 minutes needed to go from 10% to 80% on the smaller battery pack, and just a few minutes more for the larger one.
The new EV3 comes with a smart interior, with two 12.3-inch screens and one five-inch display for the climate control settings – these are positioned under a single panel for almost 30-inches of glass real-estate. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the two top trims get the lion’s share of luxury features. The EV3 makes for an ideal city car, given its small proportions and efficiency-minded powertrain.
Under $30,000: But There’s A Catch
2027 Kia Niro Hybrid: MSRP $29,890
The Kia Niro used to be available with three powertrains, namely gas, hybrid, and electric, but for 2027, that’s down to just the hybrid and EV – and the former is still priced under $30k to start. All five models in the Niro Hybrid lineup use a 1.6-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain to make 139 hp and 195 lb-ft, which translates to rather lethargic performance. The payoff is at the pumps, however, where the EPA estimates for gas mileage are impressive: 53/46/50 mpg across the lineup, with a total driving range of around 555 miles.
2026 Kia Niro EV: MSRP $39,700

There is an exception to the sub-$30k pricing mentioned in the title of this article, and that’s because the Niro model lineup also includes this, the Niro EV which starts at $39,700. While its cheaper siblings do offer more trims and a lower starting price, the EV version gets more power at 201 hp, a 113 MPGe rating from the EPA, and two fully loaded trims for the increase in price.
Heated seats, SynTex and cloth upholstery, ambient lighting, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation (and a matching instrument cluster) are all standard for the $40k starting price, and the priciest trims add ventilated front seats, a power sunroof, perforated faux leather seat trim, a head-up display, Harman Kardon sound, and more.
There’s a catch, though. The Kia Niro EV is being discontinued after this model year, making way for the newer EV3 – which means the Kia small car lineup will be much cheaper in 2027, with all models under, or just over $30,000.
