Porsche may be the singular brand that defined modern sports car design. The German brand’s cars typically have a distinctive silhouette and front fascia, descending at least indirectly from the legendary 911. Like the Range Rover among luxury SUVs, the goal for many burgeoning sports car manufacturers is to produce something that looks like a Porsche (and thus is recognizably a premium sports car to the average buyer).
Some teaser images just popped up in automotive media circles that look remarkably similar to a Porsche Taycan. But the soon-to-be-revealed vehicle is actually from a Chinese manufacturer. It is the SAIC Z7.

What Is The SAIC Z7

The SAIC Z7 is a midsize electric vehicle. Teaser images show a swoopy, very Porsche Taycan-like four-door coupe-style sedan. CarNewsChina estimates its length to be about 5,000 mm or 196.9 inches, about an inch and a half longer than the Taycan. Spy shots have shown there may be a shooting brake version of the car coming as well. It will be the SAIC brand’s second production model; it previously released an H5 crossover, offered in both electric and range-extender versions.
According to CarNewsChina, SAIC is targeting the Z7 at younger buyers. And its starting price below $30,000 will be incredibly low by American standards. The only EVs even nominally under $30,000 in the US are the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV and the 2026 Nissan Leaf. Neither of those looks much like a Porsche. The SAIC S7 will be cheaper in China than every non-Maverick car the Ford Motor Company sells in America.

We don’t have specs or full information for the SAIC S7 yet. It’s due to receive a full reveal later in 2026. So, there’s not much to say about performance or range yet. The SAIC S7’s roof clearly shows a LiDAR sensor, suggesting it will offer some form of advanced driving technology.
Will We See The SAIC S7 Or Other Chinese Cars Come To North America?

It is hard to tell. In the US, the government has placed an enormous 100 percent tariff on vehicles imported from China. However, perhaps to the chagrin of American manufacturers, the president has also expressed support for Chinese vehicles to enter the market if China builds factories for them in the United States. Of course, that infrastructure would take years to set up, and using American labor and supply chains would likely increase the cost of those Chinese vehicles, negating their competitive advantage.

Interestingly, Canada just eliminated its 100 percent tariff on Chinese-imported vehicles, which could mean vehicles like the SAIC S7 hit the market north of the border. However, it is unclear whether Chinese companies develop cars specifically to meet Canadian safety standards, given the relatively small market compared to the US, where manufacturers sell more than 8.5 times as many cars.
