For the longest time, American luxury buyers knew what to do when they were ready for their next vehicle. They would typically pick up the phone and talk to their favorite salesperson at a BMW, Mercedes, or Audi dealer, and rely on that German reputation and quiet confidence to carry the day. For those people, some Japanese options might have come into the frame, but buyers were unlikely to consider anything from Korea, even if Genesis started to look like an interesting outsider.

But today, Genesis no longer needs to be invited to the party. It’s proving itself in the market again and again, and it’s also growing sales in the United States while parts of the German luxury segment are under pressure, especially in compact luxury SUVs. BMW is still performing well in 2026, but Audi and, to a lesser extent, Mercedes-Benz, now have a Korean problem that they need to address.

The Quiet Reshuffle Was Hiding In Plain Sight

Since its initial arrival, Genesis has been taking a slow but steady approach to the US marketplace. It first appeared as a standalone luxury brand with some interesting sedans, but the automaker became far more competitive when it began launching high-end SUVs that American buyers wanted. Now, there’s the GV80, a flagship crossover, and the all-important GV70 competing in the heart of the luxury market.

Slowly but surely, the American luxury market has become less sentimental or predictable. Certainly, brand history still counts for a lot, but other factors such as the dealer experience, extras, warranty coverage, and monthly payments also matter. Genesis has factored these into the equation, and in this area, it has made a significant difference in the marketplace. In essence, it has been able to win enough comparison shopping moments in the right areas and at just the right times.

In 2025, Genesis Motor America delivered 82,331 vehicles in the US, a 10% bump over 2024. Within that number, the GV70 had 33,876 sales, up a whopping 26%, while the larger GV80 recorded 23,799 units, up 4%. Genesis still lags well behind BMW, but the numbers are impressive when you consider that this is a relatively young company which does not have a decades-long reputation to lean on.

Genesis Is Scoring In The Compact Luxury SUV Sweet Spot

In the compact luxury SUV segment, the Genesis GV70 goes up against the BMW X3, the Mercedes-Benz GLC, and the Audi Q5, all of which are key products for their brands. The GV70 uses a standard 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four, producing 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque, and comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. There’s also a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 model available with 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. By comparison, the 2026 BMW X3 30 xDrive has 255 horsepower, the same as the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC, while the Audi Q5 makes 268 hp. So, right off the bat, the GV70 presents more power, and it goes on sale at $48,985 versus $51,300 for the Bimmer, $51,550 for the Mercedes, and $52,800 for the Audi.

The value case may become even more pointed when you start looking at ownership coverage. Genesis has its own famous warranties, including a 5-year, 60,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty and a 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty for gas vehicles. Genesis also includes its Service Valet and complimentary maintenance package for the first 36,000 miles or 3 years, which clearly appeals to luxury shoppers who may be wary of long-term repair exposure. Some buyers may wonder why they should pay more and get less coverage when choosing Mercedes or Audi. And if the badge doesn’t mean absolutely everything, they may turn to Genesis instead.

Mercedes And Audi Are Exposed In Different Ways

In 2025, Audi sold around 202,000 vehicles in North America excluding Mexico, representing a 12.2% dip. Model-level figures show that Audi of America sold 164,942 vehicles, a 16% drop over 2024. The Q5 was still the top US model for Audi but dipped 19%, while the Q3 went down even further, with a 27% reduction. That certainly puts Audi under clear pressure in the premium SUV segment, while the GV70 gains momentum.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz may have done somewhat better in the US. In 2025, Mercedes-Benz USA sold 303,200 passenger cars, up 1%, with the GLC posting a 20% year-over-year increase in retail sales. Also, the GLE was up 14% and recorded its best US retail sales year. But globally, the picture was not as rosy for Mercedes, with a 9% decline in its Cars division. The company is facing a difficult mix of EV transition costs, tariffs, Chinese competition, and product-cycle pressures. The situation may increasingly leave the GLC vulnerable to an attack from Genesis, especially if the badge is no longer the biggest buyer criterion.

In the US, Audi’s challenges are more urgent than those of Mercedes-Benz. But both companies need to try to prevent Genesis from poaching their long-term customers, with its clear value-led consideration.

BMW’s Record Year Proved That This Isn’t A German Collapse

Exterior view of the BMW X3BMW

Audi and Mercedes-Benz may be starting to look over their corporate shoulders, but BMW is in a confident mood. In 2025, the company had a record year in the US, selling 388,897 vehicles, a 4.7% increase over 2024. That was the company’s third consecutive US sales record, with successes in both the light truck and passenger car divisions. When you tease out the passenger car number separately, it rose 5.1% to 172,155 units. Here, BMW is clearly leaning on its resilient enthusiast identity, strong product cadence, and broad SUV lineup. The X3 is a formidable opponent to BMW’s other German rivals, as well as to Genesis, and it carries decades of BMW equity.

What’s Next For Korea’s Luxury Brand?

Genesis has been making the news for all the right reasons the last while – here’s what it has up its sleeve.

Of course, BMW’s confidence doesn’t erase the progress of Genesis, but it may just define the battleground more precisely. Genesis is clearly making a strong case in specific areas where buyers may be open to a full-scale reassessment. These niches tend to involve first-time premium buyers or warranty-conscious households, often searching in the sub-$60,000 luxury sector. Shoppers may aspire to enter those higher segments of the market but may not want to feel they’re being forced into costly option packages.

The Next Fight Will Be About Trust

Press image of the 2026 Genesis GV70Genesis

Genesis appears to be preparing for the next battle with a large North American push on the drawing boards. The company has announced 22 all-new or significantly updated vehicles across both the US and Canada between 2026 and 2030. These models will represent updated current vehicles, derivative models, new powertrains, and expanded trims. Genesis is also branching into hybrid models, with hybrid luxury SUVs sure to be one of the big growth areas in the years ahead.

As part of its plans, Genesis will field the 2027 GV70, which should arrive in the summer of 2026. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz will field an electric GLC SUV, an electric C-Class Sedan, and 2027 versions of both the GLE and the GLS. Audi won’t be standing still either, and it will try to recover momentum in North America through models like the Q6 e-tron and A6 e-tron.

How One Luxury Brand Did What Lexus, Infiniti, And Acura All Failed To Do

Genesis has been making waves in the US since its inception a decade ago, primarily by going against the rulebook used by its Japanese competitors.

Genesis can be sure that its German competitors would be ready to attack and realize that it already has deeper dealer networks, broader performance portfolios, and stronger residual familiarity. But Genesis still appears to be the fresh-faced newcomer, with its purpose-built products that are not merely meant to retain customers through force of habit.

Mercedes-Benz may realize that Genesis is no longer a novelty competitor. The Korean company can now compete as a rational premium choice, with some value-rich upscale models and headline warranty coverage options too. And slowly but surely, Genesis may turn comparison shoppers into converts. While the GV70 does not necessarily need to outsell vehicles like the X3, GLC, or Q5 outright, it can certainly make owning a luxury vehicle feel far less automatic.
