UPDATE: 2026/08/25 08:30 EST BY DAN CLOUGHER

$30,000 Buys You A Solid Used Full-Size With A More Traditional Drivetrain

We’ve included a section which covers how much used GMC Sierra truck buyers can expect to net for around $30,000.

Truck buyers have never had it easy when it comes to balancing capability and cost — but right now, there’s a genuinely surprising deal hiding in plain sight. While most shoppers are busy debating V8 displacement figures and brand allegiances, GMC has quietly made its full-size Sierra 1500 attainable at a price that undercuts a good chunk of the midsize segment. The catch? You have to be willing to live with a four-cylinder engine. For many buyers, that’s a dealbreaker before they’ve even looked at the numbers. That’s a mistake worth reconsidering.

GMC is currently offering enough discounts and incentives for the Sierra 1500 with a TurboMax engine to make it even cheaper than most midsize pickup trucks. If buyers can look past their attachment to larger engines, then we feel as though the TurboMax Sierra 1500 is a worthy option. In a battle among impressive engineering, emotional attachment to V8s, and buyers’ own wallets, what comes out on top?

All specs have been sourced directly from the automakers. Prices are correct at the time of writing — automakers reserve the right to change prices at any time without notice. Price incentives and other deals may vary by location and dealer offers.

Sticker Shock — It’s Cheaper Than You Think

Full-size pickup trucks like the GMC Sierra 1500 are generally an expensive investment. The bigger you get, the more money you can expect to spend. However, this truck is not nearly as costly as you might think. The current model year offers trims ranging from the base Pro to the top-tier Denali Ultimate before destination, options, taxes, incentives, and so on. As long as you avoid the higher trims like the Denali and AT4X, you can actually keep costs down. That said, GMC is offering a few incentives that lower the Sierra 1500’s price to even more reasonable levels, as long as you’re willing to settle for its smallest engine.

    GMC’s Discounts Make It Worthwhile

Here’s the real news: the Sierra 1500 can be even cheaper than most midsize trucks. In order to clear inventory ahead of the next model year, GMC decided to run promotions with significant discounts on the Sierra 1500 — but only on those equipped with a TurboMax engine. Not every trim or configuration of the truck qualifies. Nevertheless, you can save a meaningful amount by ordering a Pro model with a four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission in a rear-wheel-drive configuration.

Incentives start with a $1,750 purchase allowance, then another $1,750 in bonus cash, and finally a $1,350 package discount at the time of writing. All told, the total savings of $4,850 brings the starting cost of a brand-new Sierra 1500 Pro to $33,450. That’s just from GMC itself — factor in dealership-specific savings, and there are reports of up to $7,000 off a new Sierra 1500. Stack those dealer discounts on top of GMC’s own offers, and you could be looking at just north of $10,000 off a brand-new Sierra. Of course, the Pro trim is about as bare-bones as it gets. You might get away with a near-$30k half-ton truck, but it would be better suited as a workhorse rather than a daily driver.

    Cheaper Than Most Midsize Trucks

If the price alone hasn’t convinced you, let’s put it into perspective. The Sierra 1500 Pro can cost as little as $33,450 excluding destination and any dealership incentives — that’s cheaper than most midsize pickups on the market. For example, the GMC Canyon uses the same TurboMax engine, but it starts at $38,900 before destination. As of now, GMC is only offering a $750 incentive on the Canyon, which still keeps it well above $38k.

On that note, the Ford Ranger is a competitive midsize model with a starting price in the same ballpark as the discounted Sierra 1500, but it can’t tow or haul nearly as much. Even the Ford Maverick, a compact pickup that largely occupies a class by itself, spans a wide price range depending on trim level. We bring it up because its higher trims can approach the cost of a base Sierra 1500, yet its towing capacity falls thousands of pounds short. It might not seem entirely fair to compare the two on capability alone, but it’s hard to ignore when the price tags are in the same neighborhood.

GMC Didn’t Build This For No Reason

2022 – 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 5th Gen (GMTT1XX) interior view of the front cabinGMC

The GMC Sierra 1500 exists to fill the need for capable pickup trucks that can handle heavy towing and hauling duties while also serving as a family hauler or everyday driver. With that in mind, why does the TurboMax Sierra 1500 exist? America’s appetite for bigger and more powerful vehicles keeps growing — full-size trucks are only getting larger and more powerful, and therefore more expensive.

People want to keep buying trucks, but not everybody can afford them. That’s where the TurboMax engine comes into play — it’s a way for GMC to offer its large workhorse at a lower price without abandoning the values truck buyers care about. That way, American truck culture can keep moving forward while owners gain better fuel efficiency without sacrificing towing and hauling capability. Owners can feel right at home in a full-size truck without worrying about a V8 draining the gas tank faster than they can fill it.

In the spirit of comparing this full-size truck to midsize models in a similar price range, the table above showcases each model’s base engine and its associated specs. Despite most people’s preconceived notions about a four-cylinder pickup truck, the TurboMax engine is actually quite powerful.

It may feel more responsive in the lighter GMC Canyon, but the Canyon’s smaller footprint also limits its towing capacity — something we’ll get into next. Where the TurboMax really distinguishes itself within the Sierra 1500’s own lineup is fuel economy. Buyers can also choose a 5.3-liter V8, a 6.2-liter V8, or a 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel inline-six. The diesel is the most efficient overall, but the four-cylinder follows closely behind.

For roughly the same price as either the Canyon or the Ranger, the Sierra 1500 Pro with its 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-four can tow up to 9,300 pounds in the proper configuration (as shown in the table above). Both midsize models are still reasonably capable, with towing capacities in the mid-to-high 7,000-pound range. However, GMC’s incentives on the base Sierra 1500 make it a stronger value proposition for buyers who need to get real work done without spending extra on tow packages or higher trims just to unlock peak towing and hauling capacity.

$30,000 Buys You A Solid Used Full-Size With A More Traditional Drivetrain

    2018 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali front 3/4GMC

Still can’t get your head around a four-cylinder full-size? Look, the stats on paper say you’re wrong, but hey, you certainly won’t be alone. While a V8-powered full-size for $30,000 won’t have you driving away with that new-car smell, it can still have you driving away in a pretty sweet truck, and here’s the proof.

You can buy a final-year fourth-gen GMC Sierra 1500 in flagship four-wheel drive Denali guise for less than what a new four-pot base trim would cost, although it will be eight years old, and have many miles unders its belt already. Still, these trucks have proven capable of serious mileages in the past, and will most the depreciation already dealt with, perhaps that’s a trade-off V8 enthusiasts are willing to pay.

The TurboMax Engine Is An Opportunity, Not An Alternative

GMC’s current incentives open up a real opportunity for buyers to reconsider four-cylinder trucks, which manage to pull off engineering feats that would have seemed unlikely just a decade ago. This GMC pickup is the automotive equivalent of a sleeper — the kind of truck most people wouldn’t expect to hold its own until they look at the spec sheet.

Buyers might see a four-cylinder full-size truck and scoff, assuming it could never match a V8 in real-world use — yet this model manages to tow 9,300 pounds and comes from a brand with genuine heritage and broad recognition. Truck owners’ emotional attachment to their V8 engines is understandable, but the TurboMax engine steps into the arena with specs that rival other full-size options and a price that’s hard to argue with.

TurboMax Doesn’t Sound So Bad Anymore, Does It?

Not only is now a great time to purchase a new GMC Sierra, but it’s also a chance to prove — to yourself and others — that V8 engines aren’t always necessary. The Sierra 1500 with its TurboMax engine is the ideal way to stay current with American truck culture while saving money upfront through incentives and over time through better fuel economy. It can tow and haul more than most Americans will ever need, and it does it all for roughly the same price as many midsize trucks. GMC isn’t just offering a good deal on its base-model full-size truck — it’s offering a genuine entry point into truck ownership for buyers willing to give a smaller engine a fair chance.
