Even though it’s getting long in tooth, we still really love the Genesis G70. It handles and steers superbly, making it one of the more fun options in the small sports sedan segment. Even better, the twin-turbo V6 model packs a serious punch. Sadly, it seems that engine is going away, leaving just the standard turbocharged four-cylinder to go up against the BMW 3 Series and others.
The Government Revealed The Change
Genesis hasn’t put out official 2027 model year details for the Genesis G70, but the American EPA apparently has some of those details. As initially spotted by Motor1, the EPA’s FuelEconomy.gov website has recently added efficiency numbers for the 2027 Genesis line. When looking up the 2027 G70, only the four-cylinder model comes up, suggesting the V6 version will be discontinued for the new model year.

As we already mentioned, we’d be sad to see the V6 go because of its impressive power. While the four-cylinder is no slouch, making 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, the 365 hp and 376 lb-ft the V6 produces has it handily beat. It also put the G70 in range of the six-cylinder options for the BMW 3 Series and Audi S5.
Not every Genesis model has been added to the publicly accessible database yet, though. The G90 flagship sedan doesn’t show up at all. The GV90 SUV is also absent, but that’s not surprising since Genesis revealed it less than a week ago. We’ve reached out to Genesis for confirmation and comment, but haven’t received a response at the time of publishing. We’ll update this post if and when we get a reply.

The V6 Isn’t Gone Entirely
Even if the Genesis G70 loses the V6, there will still be ways to get it. At least, there will be ways to get a version of it. The similarly sized GV70 SUV, the midsize G80 sedan, and the midsize GV80 SUV all still feature a twin-turbo V6 option. However, it’s the updated 3.5-liter version of the engine, rather than the 3.3-liter one. This engine also makes more power and torque at 375 hp and 391 lb-ft. The GV80 Coupe and the G90 even have versions that combine the twin-turbo V6 with an electric supercharger to both improve response and make yet more power: 409 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque.
The G70 Is The Bestselling Genesis Sedan
Even though the biggest sellers for Genesis are its GV80 and GV70 SUVs, the G70 still makes up a solid chunk of the brand’s total sales. With 6,653 sales through July of this year, the G70 has roughly tripled the sales of the next-bestselling sedan, the G80. It’s even the third-bestselling model overall for the brand, and this year’s sales are slightly up over last year.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:
Dropping an appealing powertrain, one that helps the G70 be competitive against establishment luxury models, would seem like a sign that Genesis could be dropping the G70. However, considering the fact that the G70 still steadily sells in significant numbers, and that Genesis is clearly set on being a true, full-line luxury automaker, that seems quite unlikely.
What seems far more likely to us, is that Genesis, and Hyundai Motor Group more broadly, are simply phasing out the 3.3-liter engine altogether. Furthermore, since the G70 will be a decade old in the 2027 model year, with just a single refresh to its name, Genesis may be readying a whole new G70 generation. In fact, a report came out a while back suggesting the new generation could be revealed this year. While that’s readied for the near future, the G70 will likely just hang on with the four-cylinder for the brief time it takes to get the new model out.
