It’s still nowhere near on time, but the electric Porsche 718 Cayman is getting closer and closer to production. The latest from the CarBuzz spy photographers show off some more details of that nearly production-ready sports car. This time it’s the rear side windows. We can finally see the real profile of the glass for the first time.

Porsche doesn’t do massive design changes between generations, and the German automaker isn’t changing that longstanding pattern for the new Cayman. So it looks like what you would expect, like a Cayman.
New Roofline Is More Bubble Than Before

The gentle slope of the roofline is largely the same as the current generation of the car. However, it extends much further to the rear than before. There’s no tiny trunk that prior generations of the coupe had.
Don’t be fooled by that chrome strip. The real side glass has matte black trim. It curls up toward the rear of the car, similar to the current Cayman. That’s one of the details that helps set it apart from the 911, which does not get that little curl. This small detail has made it easy for Porsche to disguise the prototypes to make them look even more like the 911. At a glance, anyway. Anyone up close, like our spy photographer, will easily spot the fake trim.

From the rear of the car, it appears that the hatch will be entirely glass. Like a pop-up rear window instead of the more conventional metal and glass hatch of the current-generation Cayman.

This Porsche prototype still has the fake headlamp stickers surrounding the real ones as an attempt to throw us off, but the stickers seem much fainter than before. That gives us a better look at the light design, which has four large accent sections surrounding the center lamp. It’s a now-familiar look for Porsche, but it’s a good one.

Porsche officially closed the order books on the 718 Boxster and Cayman with gas engines earlier this month. Just days later, brand boss Oliver Blume reversed course. Porsche will still build the electric versions of the sports cars, but it said it will build new gas-fired models as well. He described this as being for the “top” versions of the cars, so you might need to be ready to hand out GT4 money if you want a combustion mid-engine Porsche instead of electric.
Battery Delays Are Pushing Back The Launch

One of the largest delays for the electric Porsche sports car was an issue that was out of the brand’s hands. A bankruptcy at one of the company’s battery suppliers put a serious dent in Porsche’s plans. Battery sourcing trouble is said to be responsible for the car being pushed back from 2026 to 2027.
Porsche execs have insisted that this will continue to be a driver’s car. The VP for the model line, Frank Moser, has said that Porsche is focusing on keeping the weight down rather than aiming for maximum range. “We cannot make a two-ton, two-door sports car,” he said.
Though we see more of the car this time around, we still don’t have an update on its arrival. Expect the official reveal sometime late next year or possibly into 2027.
