Engine technology has moved fast in the last 50 years, both in terms of quieter, more efficient powerplants and high-performance, more exciting mills. The turbocharger is now a common feature of modern combustion engines because automakers can tune them to improve fuel economy and power output from an otherwise small-displacement powerplant. Some powerful models, however, resist this evolution and remain naturally aspirated, becoming the exception to the rule that we are becoming used to. These engines maximize their output by using technology like variable valve timing. We’ve compiled a list of the most powerful engines that don’t rely on forced induction to get going. The selection gets shorter every year, so if you’re looking for the purest form of power, time is running out.

2026 Dodge Durango R/T
475 Horsepower
Dodge is still sticking by this generation of Durango. The GT Hemi trim offers a 5.7-liter V8 making 360 hp and 390 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile, the R/T grade packs the proven 6.4-liter V8 engine producing 475 horsepower and a hefty 470 lb-ft through an eight-speed transmission. The latest Durango R/T makes the race to 60 miles per hour in only 4.4 seconds and can tow up to 8,700 pounds.
The R/T is the top variant to make this list because the next step higher in the lineup isn’t naturally aspirated. The SRT Hellcat packs a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 with 710 hp and 645 lb-ft. Long may this engine continue to show that there’s no replacement for displacement.

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
495 Horsepower
The Chevrolet Corvette has long stood as one of the best power bargains compared to its European challengers, and the small-block 6.2 V8 makes a hefty 495 horsepower. You’ll have to tick the Z51 performance pack to get all that power, as it comes with a sports exhaust system that helps push five additional ponies. A 2.9-second 0-60 time can be yours for $70,000 in 2026, which is impressive as every car seems to get more expensive. The mid-mounted engine also has a dry-sump oil system, which can help keep critical parts lubricated under heavy cornering.
You can exit a corner and feed in power with certainty that the engine isn’t going to bite you in the ass but is going to give you all the power you need. It also provides, at least with the performance exhaust system, a riotous soundtrack.

Ford Mustang Dark Horse
500 Horsepower
The most powerful naturally aspirated Ford Mustang is still the Dark Horse, which makes do with a huge 500 horsepower going to the rear wheels. Ford builds this car for enthusiastic drivers, which is why it offers an optional six-speed manual transmission, a rare sight in such powerful cars today. To make it more fun, there’s also a handbrake that can lock the rear wheels instantly for big drift entries, launch control, and Ford’s own MagneRide damping system that helps aid mechanical grip. It’s not the most powerful on our list, but it may be the most fun.
With ‘only’ 500 hp on tap, the Dark Horse has a tremendous amount of grip, giving you the confidence to hustle it through high-speed corners. Because it’s naturally aspirated, the V8 pulls hard right to its 7,500-rpm redline with a linear power band that’s predictable and easy to manage.

Porsche 911 GT3
502 Horsepower
While the Porsche 911 GT3 RS is rumored to add a turbocharger in its next generation, the regular GT3 continues into 2026 with a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine that defies modern emission regulations. Over 500 horsepower, a manual gearbox, and track-inspired aerodynamics make this one of the best driver’s cars around if you need performance. For this year, you can experience the engine with rear passengers, or even drop the roof with the GT3 S/C, the first GT product that lets you feel the wind in your hair. Around 500 horsepower is what most people consider a sweet spot in terms of power, but we’re not even halfway through the list.
It’s one of the all-time greats, and you realize this the first time you take it to 9,000 rpm before changing gears. At 9,000 rpm, this car emits a noise that is gloriously mechanical and entirely orgasmic. At 9,000 rpm, you wonder why on earth you’d ever buy an electric vehicle.

Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport
535 Horsepower
New for the 2027 model year, the Grand Sport is the second of three Corvette entries on this list, showing that America still knows how to make huge V8s work. The 6.7-liter LS6 engine puts out a huge 535 horsepower, and thanks to a dual-clutch transmission, it can complete the quarter-mile in under 11.0 seconds. Power is achieved by the huge compression ratio, which is the highest of any Corvette V8 at 13:1 with a larger piston stroke. An available track package includes carbon-ceramic brakes and sticky tires, so the power doesn’t go to waste.

Chevrolet Corvette Z06
670 Horsepower
The most powerful naturally aspirated V8 in a production car title belongs to the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and its 5.5-liter LT6 V8 engine. The mill revs to a huge 8,600 rpm thanks to a flat-plane crank configuration and sits in the middle of the car, aiding in weight distribution and balance. The flat-plane also allows it to speed up much faster compared to engines of the past, and the valves are sodium-lined to increase efficiency.
The engine also features forged titanium connecting rods and dual-overhead camshafts, which differ from the usual pushrod design of LS Chevy engines. To aid control, there’s an aero package, standard Brembo brakes, and magnetic ride control that reacts to inputs almost instantly. To the purists, this is the ‘Vette of choice, with no turbochargers sipping up noise and power, just pure American heft.

Ferrari Purosangue
715 Horsepower
SUV haters look away now: the Ferrari Purosangue might not be the design you expect from the Italian marque, but no one can argue that the naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 emits the sound of Italy. It’s one of the last non-hybrid, non-turbocharged V12 engines around, and the SUV shape makes this application more practical for a large range of buyers. To match the intended purpose, Ferrari tunes the V12 to create 80% of its 528 lb-ft of torque at just 2,100 rpm. It’s impossible to believe the halo supercar, the F80, makes do with only a V6 while the family car has a pounding V12.

Lamborghini Revuelto
814 Horsepower (Engine Only)
A Lamborghini is all about theater, and even if the flagship bull, the Revuelto, now has an electric motor, the naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 still makes 814 horsepower on its own. Combined with the electric motors, there’s a hefty 1,001 hp in total to push you along. If you’re annoyed at the hybrid motors, don’t be. They’re mainly there to aid in torque gaps when changing gear or on launch. Plus, the electric range is negligible. Because of the battery and motors, the gearbox has had to be placed behind the V12, which is why the exhausts are so high at the rear.

Ferrari 12Cilindri
819 Horsepower
A front-engined V12 is as pure as a Ferrari gets, and the 12Cilindri is currently the most powerful naturally aspirated one on offer. Daytona-inspired styling makes for that long GT shape we love, and 819 hp is hiding under there thanks to 6.5 liters of displacement. It blasts up to a 211 mph top speed, too. The connecting rods are titanium, and the pistons are made from a special aluminum alloy that lowers weight and increases rigidity.
New for 2026, there’s a limited-run Manuale version, which lets 1,499 owners (that’s how many will be made) change their own gears using the first six gears of the usual eight-speed DCT. It’s pretty impressive, and it’s the first manual Ferrari in about 20 years. It might not be a ‘true’ manual, but who cares? Over 800 horsepower, 12 cylinders, and a stick? Sign us up.

Bugatti Tourbillon
1,000 Horsepower (Engine Only)
Was it ever going to be anything else? The Cosworth-developed V16 engine in the Bugatti Tourbillon makes a huge 1,000 horsepower on its own, upped to 1,800 hp when you include the electric motors. Thanks to clever manufacturing and materials, this engine actually weighs less than the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s V12, which Cosworth also worked on. It’s the first time Bugatti (or any company) has used a V16 in their cars since the 1930s — just fitting into this car was a nightmare.
Cosworth is known for making crazy engines, and they’re usually naturally aspirated, like this one or the Gordon Murray Automotive’s T50 engine. The 8.35-liter unit took over a year to develop and can rev to an impressive 9,000 rpm, which seems almost impossible for such an engine. If Bugatti can’t be the fastest manufacturer in the world anymore, there’s no doubt that the V16 will create quite a stir in other ways when it hits the streets.
