Diesel Prices Hit All-Time High Just In Time For Labor Day

With no end in sight for tensions in the Middle East, the Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed since February (depending on who you ask) and continues to take a heavy toll on global gas prices. Peace talks between the United States and Iran have repeatedly failed to yield a long-term solution, so there’s no telling when prices at the pump will finally come down.

As it stands, higher fuel-related expenses are pushing up the cost of essential goods at a time when inflation is already a major concern for many households. The whole situation is a mess and showing no real signs of improvement at this time, all to the detriment of everyday consumers and people who just want to get from point A to B without spending a huge chunk of their hard-earned paycheck on gas.

Labor Day Came With Some Bad News This Year

Just as hard-working Americans were getting ready for Labor Day festivities, average diesel prices across the country soared to a record-high $5.9015. To put that into perspective, one would pay just $3.7088 for a gallon of diesel (on average) exactly one year ago, based on data from the AAA.

In other words, folks are now spending nearly 60% more on diesel than they did last year – a huge increase, especially for regular Joes living paycheck to paycheck. Which, by the way, is said to be more than half of all Americans right now. Times are particularly tough in California, where diesel prices at the pump rose to an eye-watering $7.8256. At the other end of the spectrum, there is Oklahoma with an average of $5.4532 per gallon.

How Are Things Looking For Gasoline?

The situation isn’t quite as dire when it comes to gasoline, but it’s certainly not great, either. Regular unleaded sells for an average of $4.1505, having also set an all-time high for Labor Day compared to the previous $3.82 peak from September 3, 2012. On the brighter side, though, it’s still far below the $5.0165 record reached in June 2022.

California tops the list once again at $5.8602 for regular gas, while Indiana ranks the lowest with an average of $3.4314. And compared to this time last year, gasoline prices are now 30% higher across the board – not as bad as diesel, but not ideal by any stretch of the imagination.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters

Diesel is not the fuel of choice for most commuter cars. In fact almost no new diesel cars are even available, with the fuel limited to heavy duty trucks and a handful of GM SUVs. But soaring diesel prices have knock-on effects for food transportation, deliveries, and agriculture. With higher fuel prices inevitably trickling down to the cost of goods at the shelves, it’s reasonable to ask ourselves how sustainable a prolonged Middle Eastern conflict actually is in today’s economic climate.

The only silver lining here is that gas prices are expected to trend downward in the coming months, but a more permanent solution will only be possible once geopolitical tensions ease off. And given how things are currently going, we wouldn’t bet on that happening very soon.
