GWM’s (HKG: 2333) Tank brand has commenced pre-sales for the updated Tank 400 SUV (sport utility vehicle), refreshing one of its most important models.

The Tank 400 offers Hi4-T and Hi4-Z versions, with pre-sales prices starting at RMB 309,800 ($43,520) and RMB 329,800 respectively.

The hybrid SUV was first launched in September 2023, initially offering only the Hi4-T version targeting the hardcore off-road market. The newly added Hi4-Z version features reduced off-road capabilities and geared toward urban use.

Hi4-Z represents GWM’s new powertrain system. Vehicles equipped with this system offer greater off-road capability than typical urban SUVs, though they lack the mechanical four-wheel drive systems found in traditional hardcore off-road vehicles.

It is has a 2.0T engine delivering a peak power of 180 kW and a peak net torque of 380 Nm.

The Tank 400 Hi4-T variant has a curb weight of 2,770 kg and features an electric motor delivering 130 kW peak power, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.

The Hi4-Z variant weighs 2,950 kg and utilizes dual electric motors with a combined peak power of 635 kW, achieving 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 4.3 seconds.

The SUV utilize ternary lithium batteries with capacities of 37.1 kWh or 59.0 kWh, delivering ranges of 105 km or 200 km.

It features a newly added LiDAR sensor on the roof and incorporates GWM’s third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra driver assistance system, supporting Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) functionality for both urban and highway driving.

The Tank brand sold 21,441 units in September, marking a 14.41 percent year-on-year increase and contributing 16.04 percent to GWM’s monthly sales, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

From January to September, the Tank brand sold 165,143 units, a 2.75 percent decrease compared to the same period last year.

The brand’s primary competitor is Fang Cheng Bao, a BYD (HKG: 1211) sub-brand that yesterday launched new variants of its Bao 5 and Bao 8 off-road SUVs to target a broader customer base.

    ($1 = RMB 7.1191)

The updated Tank 500 secured 12,257 firm orders within two hours of its launch.
