Leapmotor (HKEX: 9863) will launch the A05 compact electric vehicle (EV) in China next week, adding another volume model at a company that just set a monthly delivery record.
The A05 will officially go on sale on Aug 10, according to a Monday report by local automotive media outlet Auto Home. Leapmotor has yet to announce the plan through its official channels.
The car began taking pre-orders in China on July 27, with consumers able to place a reservation for 99 yuan ($15) and receive a set of pre-order benefits.
The A05 measures 4,200 millimeters long, 1,800 millimeters wide and 1,560 millimeters tall, with a wheelbase of 2,605 millimeters. While classified as a sedan in China, the vehicle is effectively a compact hatchback.
It offers motors with 70 kilowatts and 90 kilowatts of power, paired with 39.8-kWh and 53-kWh battery packs for CLTC ranges of 405 kilometers and 510 kilometers respectively, according to previously released information.
The cabin is one of the selling points of the entry-level model. The A05 comes standard with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8295 chip, an 8.88-inch instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch center display.
The car also features a 12-speaker audio system and supports microphone-free karaoke, which Leapmotor said is unique in its segment.
The A05 has 33 storage spaces in total, with a standard trunk capacity of 474 liters that expands to a maximum of 1,308 liters, plus a 91-liter sunken storage compartment.
Design-wise, the A05 continues the A-series family look with a closed-off grille, a two-tone body, semi-hidden door handles and smiley-face taillights. LiDAR is available as an option.
The A05 is the second model on Leapmotor’s A platform after the A10 small SUV (sport utility vehicle), and will compete with the BYD (HKEX: 1211) Dolphin and the Geely Auto (HKEX: 0175) Xingyuan.
The company positions it as a vehicle for urban commuting, targeting mainly young female consumers.
For reference, the A10 went on sale in March at prices from 65,800 yuan to 86,800 yuan, and set a record with 26,804 units sold in June.
The Stellantis NV (NYSE: STLA)-backed automaker delivered 101,267 vehicles globally in July, topping 100,000 in a single month for the first time and up 102.01% year-on-year.
Still, its cumulative deliveries of 457,754 units in the first seven months represent only about 46% of its 1 million target for 2026. It would need to average more than 108,000 deliveries a month over the remaining five months to reach the goal.
Leapmotor senior vice president Xu Jun said on Jul 16 that the company would not adjust its full-year target for now, and would work on products, marketing and channels to get as close to it as possible.
Management has previously said new models, including the A10, would account for 60% of total sales in 2026.
