Ferrari’s first all-electric model, the Luce, made its China debut and went on sale in Shanghai on Friday, with a starting price of 3.988 million yuan ($586,630). The car had previously made its global premiere in Rome.
Luce means “light” in Italian. The model marks the formal entry into a new electric era for the supercar maker, which is best known for its internal combustion engines.
The launch in China marks the beginning of Ferrari’s efforts to gauge interest in the Luce among the ultra-wealthy in the world’s largest EV market.
The new car is powered by four independent electric motors, two each on the front and rear axles. The system delivers a combined output of 772 kilowatts (1,035 hp) and peak torque of 990 Nm.
The Luce can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in just 2.5 seconds and from 0 to 200 kph in 6.8 seconds, with a top speed exceeding 310 kph.
Power comes from a 122 kWh battery pack built on an 800-volt electrical architecture.
The car has a range of 530 kilometers and can replenish 70 kWh in 20 minutes at a 350-kilowatt fast-charging station.
Notably, the Luce’s design was not handled by Ferrari’s in-house design center. The project was instead entrusted to the external team LoveFrom.
LoveFrom was co-founded by Jonathan Ive, Apple’s former chief design officer, and Marc Newson. Ferrari chairman John Elkann has known the two for many years.
The move was aimed at introducing a fresh perspective through cross-disciplinary collaboration, drawing on experience from the luxury goods industry to inspire a brand-new design language.
The interior was led by Ive, with an emphasis on physical control buttons and a focus on glass, aluminum and a minimalist style.
The Luce adopts a four-door, five-seat layout. It is the second four-door model Ferrari has launched and the brand’s first five-seater.
The new car measures 5,026 mm in length, 1,999 mm in width and 1,544 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,961 mm. Its most distinctive feature is the glass-shell cabin design, paired with floating aerodynamic wing elements.
The car is also equipped with the largest wheels ever fitted to a Ferrari production road car, with different specifications front and rear: the front wheels measure 23 inches in diameter, the rear 24 inches.
Both the front and rear light clusters use transparent panels that blend into the body. The round taillights pay tribute to the classic aesthetics of the Ferrari 360 Modena and 458 Italia.
The cabin features four custom Samsung OLED screens, measuring 12.9 inches, 12 inches, 10.1 inches and 6.3 inches. The steering wheel is made from 100% recycled aluminum.
The new car comes in five launch colors, including the Giallo Luce yellow, a custom shade developed specifically for the model and inspired by the classic yellow of Ferrari’s prancing horse emblem.
Ferrari stressed that electrification is not a replacement for its combustion product line but will develop in parallel with it.
The Denza Z comes in three variants, all powered by a tri-motor system with a combined peak output of 1,180 kW (1,582 hp).
