The federal government said vehicle thefts continued to decline across Canada as efforts under its National Action Plan on Combatting Auto Theft expanded. Public Safety Canada reported police-reported motor vehicle theft incidents fell 16 per cent in 2025 after declining 16 per cent in 2024. According to the Équité Association report referenced by the government, national auto thefts also fell 10 per cent during the first half of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier. When a Tesla vehicle is charging, the plug is locked to the charging port and driving is disabled. To put the car in drive, a charging cable has to be manually released from the vehicle’s charging port. Since the shooting in Twin Falls, Idaho, Tesla owners have been requesting a quick-release mechanism that would allow them to escape in the event of an emergency.
