Ford’s EV sales fall 80% as Fathom launch nears
As Ford prepares to introduce its next-generation electric pickup next year, sales of its current EVs continued a downward spiral in the third quarter.
Ford reported total Q3 sales in the US fell by 6.6%, with just under 510,000 vehicles sold. Total electrified vehicle sales, including EVs and hybrids, were down 41.3% to 50,355 units.
Ford’s EV sales dropped 80%, with just 6,047 electric models sold in the third quarter. The fallout comes as Ford phases out the current F-150 Lightning. Ford sold just 289 F-150 Lightnings in the third quarter, down 97% from Q3 2025.
The Trump Administration also ended the federal $7,500 tax credit last September, which led to a rush of buyers ahead of the deadline.
Ford moved just 5,574 Mustang Mach-Es during the quarter, 72.4% fewer than the more than 20,000 it sold in Q3 2025. Sales of the electric E-Transit van fell 57%, with only 184 sold in Q3.

The Fathom will go on sale in early 2027 as the first vehicle based on Ford’s “groundbreaking” Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform.
Ford said the Fathom will start at $28,350 for the standard-range model. Including the $1,595 delivery fee, it will still start at under $30,000.

The first prototypes are set to roll off the production line at Ford’s 3-million-square-foot Louisville Assembly Plant (LAP) in 2027.
Ford CEO Jim Farley said at the 2026 Automotive News Congress this week that “It’s going to be a heck of an effort to launch this at scale, at cost, on time.”

A company spokesperson confirmed with Electrek this week that the Fathom is still set to launch in 2027 despite the comments.
According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, Ford aims to sell 100,000 Fathoms in its first year. If it does, the Fathom would be among the top-selling EVs in the US, alongside the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.
Meanwhile, Ford extended its Power Promise program for the Mustang Mach-E. Buyers of a new 2026 Mustang Mach-E are eligible for a free home charge with standard installation or a $1,500 cash bonus.
