Just a few days after Chevrolet revealed pricing and some key specs for the brand-new 2027 Silverado 1500, GMC is doing the same thing with its Sierra 1500. Though the two pickup truck siblings are very similar, they won’t be identical this time around. For starters, the starting price GMC just announced is significantly higher than Chevrolet’s.
The GMC also comes up short in capability versus Silverado, though you might not notice the difference.
2027 Sierra Gets A Lot More Stuff

If you’re shopping on price alone, the 2027 GMC Sierra is going to hurt versus the Chevy, at least for now. While the 2027 Silverado starts from $41,395, including the $2,795 destination fee – $1,700 more than the old truck – the Sierra starts nearly $10,000 higher. Yikes.
GMC wants $51,295, including destination, for the entry-level Pro model. It comes with the new 350-horsepower 2.7-liter Turbomax four-cylinder as standard, along with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It also has a 16.3-inch center screen and a 12.2-inch digital dash.
What do you get for the extra $10,000? There are a host of new safety features, including blind zone steering assist, intersection emergency braking, adaptive cruise, park assist, and surround view cameras.
The price difference is… something, but there is some good news here. This initial pricing is only for Crew Cab models, whereas Chevrolet’s pricing includes smaller extended and base cab trucks. The Sierra four-door short-bed versions are the most expensive, but there are cheaper Sierras coming that should be a closer match to Chevy. For a bit more apples-to-apples, this new 4×4 crew cab short bed is just $1,000 pricier than the same 2026 model Sierra, and will probably be on par with the new Silverado once we can fully spec-out both.
Why Does Sierra Have Lower Towing And Payload Capability?

The two trucks will at least be able to do the same work, right? If you’re maxing out your truck – be it a Turbomax, Duramax diesel, or one of the two new V8s – the Sierra comes up short. The Silverado offers between 20 and 60 more pounds of payload, with the Sierra maxing out at 2,310 pounds with the four-cylinder engine, 2,140 pounds with the 5.7 V8, and just 1,450 with the 6.6 V8.
It’s the same story with towing. Both trucks top out at 9,400 pounds with the four, but the Sierra trails by 100 pounds with the diesel, 200 with the new-generation 5.7, and 300 pounds with the 6.6, which can’t tow any more than the four. The 5.7-liter Sierra has the most capable towing setup with a max of 13,500 pounds. GM didn’t give an exact reason for the shortfall versus Chevy, but it’s likely because of features. More equipment adds more weight and that cuts into towing and payload.
From the Pro model it’s a big step to the $59,995 Elevation model. That one adds front buckets and articulation to the center screen. It also has two wireless charge spots and GMC’s fancy MultiPro tailgate. The AT4 off-roader gets the 5.7-liter V8 and a flat-bottom wheel. It also adds a locking rear differential, two-inch lift, 32-inch tires, and Super Cruise hands-off driving assist for $73,495.
Adding the X to create the AT4X costs $85,495 – $12,000 more – but includes Multimatic Jounce Control shocks, 35-inch mud-terrain tires, an 11.5-inch passenger screen, and features like underbody cameras, a Baja drive mode, and a locker up front to join the rear.
Denali is GMC’s luxury trim, and the truck slots in closer to the AT4 in price. The $76,795 pickup includes a new Denali-specific suspension, panoramic roof, leather interior with three available color choices, and more of the tech and comfort features that are optional on the other trucks. The Denali Ultimate, the new top trim, comes with the 6.6 as standard and a massive 34-gallon gas tank, as well as the passenger screen, Bose audio, and 22-inch wheels.

Big pickups are huge sellers, and lately they’ve been coming with higher and higher prices, straining buyer’s wallets. The new Sierra isn’t cheaper than the old one, but at least it’s not much more expensive, and these days that’s almost good enough. With the new 10-speed automatic across the board, once fuel economy figures are announced, it might even pay for itself.
While buyers will have to wait for more cab and box options, you won’t have to wait long for the crew cabs to hit dealers. They’ll be on sale before the end of the year.
