Volkswagen Anhui will officially launch the ID. UNYX 09, its second model jointly developed with Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV), on October 24, further expanding its electric vehicle lineup in China.
The joint venture, in which Volkswagen holds a 75% stake, posted a 3-day launch countdown poster on Weibo on Wednesday, October 21, confirming the date for a launch previously scheduled for late October.
Pre-sales for the ID. UNYX 09 began on September 24, with prices ranging from 199,900 yuan ($29,750) to 249,900 yuan.
Volkswagen positions the model as a sleek electric sports sedan with smart technology. It follows the ID. UNYX 08 SUV, the first model developed under the partnership.
The ID. UNYX 09 features a fastback design and measures 5,081 mm in length, 1,980 mm in width and 1,509 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,030 mm, according to previously released specifications.
The model is available in single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions. The former delivers peak power of 230 kW (308 hp), while the latter has front and rear motors rated at 140 kW and 230 kW, respectively.
Both versions feature a 91.963-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with cells supplied by CATL (HKEX: 3750). The rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions offer CLTC ranges of 755 kilometers and 705 kilometers, respectively.
The ID. UNYX 09 uses Xpeng’s Turing AI chip for assisted driving, with total computing power of 750 TOPS.
The model employs an end-to-end driver-assistance model, supporting highway NOA (Navigation on Autopilot), urban NOA and parking-space-to-parking-space assisted driving.
The launch will extend Volkswagen Anhui’s recent product push. On October 17, the company launched updated versions of the ID. UNYX 06 and ID. UNYX 07, adding LiDAR-based driver-assistance options and lowering entry prices.
Volkswagen’s strategic partnership with Xpeng began in July 2023, when the German automaker announced a $700 million investment in Xpeng. The companies agreed to jointly develop 2 Volkswagen-branded models using Xpeng’s platform and smart driving software.
The new models incorporating local technology are a key part of Volkswagen’s efforts to attract Chinese EV buyers and compete with domestic brands.
The updated ID. UNYX 08 starts at a limited-time price of 189,900 yuan ($28,030), 17.4% below its starting price at its April launch.
