China’s Chery Wants to Partner with American Automakers as It Looks for a Way into the US Market : Automotive Addicts

Could the next major player in the American automotive market arrive from China with a little help from Detroit? That’s a possibility worth considering as Chinese automaker Chery makes its intentions for North America increasingly clear. The company, already one of China’s biggest automotive exporters, says it is open to partnering with American manufacturers as it explores ways to enter the United States. According to a new report from Reuters, Chery Vice President Charlie Zhang discussed the company’s ambitions during an interview at its headquarters in Wuhu, China, on October 21, 2026. While no specific American automakers have been identified as potential partners, Zhang’s comments suggest Chery is looking beyond simply shipping Chinese-built vehicles overseas. Instead, the company appears willing to consider partnerships that could help it navigate the complicated regulatory and political challenges of selling cars in the United States.

For Americans who aren’t familiar with Chery, the company has grown into a significant force in the global automotive industry, selling vehicles through brands such as Omoda and Jaecoo. Its expansion into Europe and other international markets has been fueled by competitive pricing, increasingly sophisticated technology, and a growing selection of gasoline-powered, hybrid, and electric vehicles. Chery is now preparing to launch one of its brands in Canada in early 2027, potentially bringing its products closer to American consumers than ever before. However, crossing the border into the United States is an entirely different challenge. Chinese-built vehicles currently face tariffs exceeding 100%, along with strict federal regulations addressing data security and connected vehicle technology. Those barriers have effectively prevented Chinese automakers from establishing a meaningful presence in the American passenger vehicle market, even as their products gain traction elsewhere.

Interestingly, Chery believes those obstacles aren’t necessarily impossible to overcome. Speaking with Reuters, Zhang emphasized the company’s willingness to explore different arrangements, including working directly with established American automakers. He also suggested that Chery could develop vehicles using hardware and software sourced outside China, potentially addressing some of the security concerns raised by U.S. regulators. That’s an important distinction because American restrictions extend beyond traditional import tariffs to include certain connected vehicle components and software associated with Chinese manufacturers. Of course, developing a compliant vehicle and securing approval to sell it in the United States are two very different challenges. Any partnership would still need to satisfy federal regulations, navigate trade restrictions, and overcome the political sensitivities surrounding Chinese involvement in America’s automotive industry. For now, Chery’s comments represent an expression of interest rather than a confirmed business arrangement.

From an industry perspective, the possibility of a Chinese automaker partnering with an American manufacturer raises some fascinating questions. Established companies like General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis already have extensive manufacturing operations, dealership networks, and decades of experience navigating the U.S. market. Meanwhile, Chinese automakers have become increasingly competitive in developing affordable electric vehicles, battery technology, and advanced vehicle electronics. In theory, a carefully structured partnership could offer advantages to both sides, allowing American companies to access certain technologies while providing Chery with a potential route into a market that has remained largely closed to Chinese brands. However, such an arrangement would undoubtedly face scrutiny over manufacturing jobs, intellectual property, national security, and the long-term implications for domestic automakers. There’s also the question of whether American consumers would embrace vehicles developed through a Chinese partnership, particularly when brand loyalty and country of origin remain important considerations for many buyers.

We think Chery’s latest comments are another indication of just how much the global automotive industry is changing. The company started building cars in 1999 with a focus on affordable transportation, but its ambitions have grown considerably, with executives now drawing inspiration from Toyota’s reputation for quality and Tesla’s approach to innovation. Whether Chery can successfully establish itself in the United States remains uncertain, especially given the substantial trade and regulatory hurdles standing in its way. Still, the prospect of partnerships between Chinese and American automakers is something worth watching closely. More competition could eventually benefit consumers through improved technology, additional vehicle choices, and more competitive pricing, although those potential advantages would have to be weighed against legitimate concerns surrounding domestic manufacturing and economic security. For now, Chery’s planned Canadian expansion will be an interesting development to follow as the company searches for a practical way into the American market. Detroit may not have a new Chinese competitor on its doorstep just yet, but the conversation surrounding that possibility is clearly getting more serious.
