Toyota’s Hydrogen Combustion Dreams Just Went Hybrid

Toyota may be planning to combine two of its leading powertrain technologies in a quest to deliver vehicles that retain the benefits of an internal-combustion engine while also being friendlier to the environment. A patent application filed by the automaker earlier this year with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, uncovered by CarBuzz, shows the potential design for a hybrid vehicle that, instead of using a gas or diesel engine for its internal-combustion component, swaps in a hydrogen combustion engine.

Such a vehicle could deliver the efficiency and short fueling times of a hybrid, but without the carbon emissions produced by burning gasoline or diesel.

Patent filings do not guarantee the use of such technology in future vehicles and are often used exclusively as a means of protecting intellectual property. Such a filing cannot be construed as confirmation of production intent.

Hydrogen Engine Doesn’t Drive The Wheels In Toyota’s Patent

Toyota’s patent highlights a particular way of integrating a hydrogen engine with a hybrid system. The proposed setup uses the hydrogen engine solely as a generator, which then supplies electricity to a battery and electric drive system. The setup is similar to Nissan’s e-Power hybrid powertrain (which uses gasoline), giving you the efficiency and driving characteristics of an electric drive system without the need for lengthy charging.

The patent also details how Toyota could package the battery and hydrogen tanks within the vehicle, including placing part of the battery inside the center tunnel (Fig. 3). The hydrogen tanks are proposed in a different position than the current layout in the Toyota Mirai FCEV. Whereas that mounts the hydrogen tanks in such a fashion that they impact trunk and cargo carrying capacity, this new patent envisions them being laid out under the floor of the car (Fig. 1). This is effectively the same layout BMW is using on the next-gen iX5 Hydrogen SUV – which itself uses Toyota-developed fuel-cell technology.

Unlike an EV, this hybrid hydrogen powertrain doesn’t need a huge battery because the hydrogen engine can keep the battery topped up while the vehicle is running. In the new 2027 Nissan Rogue Hybrid, which features a third-generation e-Power powertrain, the battery is only a 1.67-kilowatt-hour unit.

Why Could This Succeed Where Others Have Failed?

Internal combustion engines that burn hydrogen instead of gasoline have been around for decades. Automakers have rolled out various concepts over the years, including Mazda, which even showed off a hydrogen hybrid Mazda 5 minivan in 2005 and leased a handful of examples in a trial with Japanese businesses.

However, hydrogen engines have never reached mass production or widespread availability since the technology’s real challenges persist. These include availability primarily, but more importantly, carrying enough fuel to match the performance and range delivered by traditional gasoline. Hydrogen storage in the car has also traditionally eaten up cargo volume.

This design fixes several of the previous problems, though. The new tank layout mitigates cargo volumes being impacted, firstly, but that’s the minor gain. The major benefit would be the efficiency element. Hydrogen is simply not a power dense enough fuel source to match gasoline. But when the hydrogen engine is only being used as a generator, an e-motor can deliver the actual performance. The combustion engine can be run in its most efficient state, generating maximum power with almost no harmful emissions.

Burning hydrogen produces mostly water vapor, but the high temperatures involved in combustion can still produce harmful nitrogen oxides.

CarBuzz Insights – Why This Matters

As always, a patent shouldn’t be taken as a sign that a production vehicle is on the way, but Toyota’s design shows that there is a credible way to put a hydrogen engine to work in a modern hybrid – it just takes the form of an EREV, or extended-range electric vehicle. Toyota has confirmed it’s planning a massive EREV rollout, starting in China, and while we doubt those will be powered by combustion right now, it’s clear Toyota is evaluating future possibilities.

The bigger question is whether there will be anywhere to fuel it. As EVs grow more popular and charging infrastructure expands, hydrogen is looking increasingly unlikely to become a mainstream fuel for private transportation. The fact that some of the relatively few hydrogen fueling stations are already closing down doesn’t exactly make a strong case for the technology’s future.

We could still see hydrogen engines find a home in specialized areas such as trucking or motorsports, where its advantages could make more sense than they do for everyday passenger cars.
