The biggest car news and reviews, no BS

Our free daily newsletter sends the stories that really matter directly to you, every weekday.

It’s not every day, month, or year you get the chance to buy a General Motors EV1. Few examples of the electric car pioneer exist today, and those that escaped the crusher tend to stay in hiding. That’s what makes this one for sale at a random impound auction near Atlanta so crazy—and it’s listed with practically zero background information. All we can tell from here is it’s being sold under court order with a broken windshield, tons of dust, and piles of leaves inside.

The auction ends at 1:03 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Oct. 28, meaning you have two hours from the time this article is published to search your couch cushions for pennies. Oh, and one other crucial detail: There’s a clause prohibiting any out-of-state bidders. I hope you live in Georgia.

If you do, then you’ll need to know that the current high bid is $31,500. There’s already been a lot of action as the bid count is at 71 and counting. You won’t be the only one gunning for it, is what I’m saying.

The VIN is listed as 4G5PX2250V0200212. Peak Auto Auctions / A-Tow

Clearly, the condition is less than pristine. Aside from the obvious damage to the windshield, the listing says the hood is stuck, and it’s also missing a key. I feel like there’s zero chance those old lead-acid batteries are any good now, but as I’ve learned, you can get replacement packs if you know who to talk to.

I’m not sure what happened for such a rare car that’s not even road legal to be impounded, but I’ll investigate the backstory in due time. For now, I’m betting everybody in our work Slack on how much it’ll go for. $35,000? $40,000? Who knows! There’s also a hefty 13.5% buyer’s premium, so the tow lot is about to get a nice little windfall one way or another.

We hope somebody who appreciates this car’s historical significance will snag it!
