But power that’s made at a heady 12,000 rpm on a 765cc triple that spends most of a commute nowhere near it. Wrung out on a back road, the RS makes its $13,545 price tag feel justified. Ridden to work five days a week, however, that same peak power becomes a figure paid for but rarely visited. So it’s the kind of selective performance.

The latest KTM 990 Duke R goes further in the same direction. So the aim is evidently on a track day that the bike will see a handful of times a year.

The Aprilia Tuono 660 Factory picks a different kind of selectiveness. At a featherweight 399 pounds and priced at $11,599, its 659cc twin makes 105 horsepower, trading displacement for an impressive power-to-weight number, but leaves less in reserve once the road turns ordinary. And that’s the beauty of the MT-09 SP, because it doesn’t ask a rider to pick which kind of performance they want to access on the day. It’s the versatility of the MT that transforms it according to your riding mood at the minute. It is what personifies an everyday performance bike.
