The Toyota Hybrid That Makes Gas-Only SUVs Hard To Defend

There’s really nothing intrinsically special about the compact SUV segment. It’s blotted by some of the most unoriginal vehicles on the market, save maybe the Mazda CX-50. At the end of the day, as well, it’s all just a numbers game, posturing volume over vision and drama. That’s not to say that they’re bad cars. They actually end up being some of the best when it counts in terms of reliability, gas savings, and the like; they just don’t have panache.

Toyota does boring, really, really well. Toyota is like a bad movie — you can’t really hate it because it has all the components of a movie, it’s not very original or has anything fancy, it’s just there. Toyota, however, has made one of the most interesting pivots not only in the compact SUV segment but for nearly all of their cars in general, which puts them slightly ahead. They’ve almost entirely dropped fully internal combustion engine-powered vehicles. Making it hard to argue about buying anything else in this segment other than their current offering.

The Compact SUV Segment Is Phasing Out Its Old Playbook

While this shift in the compact SUV segment might seem like it happened overnight, it’s actually been much more gradual. Like a lot of technology, buying a hybrid powertrain used to feel like a niche upgrade that gave you more power (sometimes) and certainly better MPG to speak of. Now, they can be seen offering everything from the Honda CR-V to even the aforementioned Mazda CX-50. Not only that, but they’re cleaning up the segment, especially those, like Toyota, that hopped on and made their own bandwagon early on.

    Hybrid Trims Are Outselling Gas

The shift is no longer hearsay either, as there is clear and substantiated data to back this claim up. According to an article from Cox Automotive, hybrid sales grew from 9.8 percent in the third quarter of 2024 and then rose again in 2025 to 12.8 percent in the third quarter. Hybrid variants of America’s top-selling compact SUVs like the Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V, and the Kia Sportage are steadily outpacing their gas “guzzling” siblings.

Automakers Are Reading The Same Tea Leaves

The response from the industry is an interesting and telling one. At this point, consumers almost expect that automakers’ compact offerings have to come with a hybrid option, or they’re walking. Nissan was desperate enough to make a hybrid version of the Rogue that they just rebadged the Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid to make it look semi-like a Nissan. Mazda, for the longest time, didn’t seem to be making plans to include a hybrid powertrain for the CX-5, but we’ll finally see one for the 2027 model. Consumers haven’t been as quick to delve headfirst into full electric cars, and hybrids are a much more palatable option.

This is the story of how a modest crossover quietly rose to become one of America’s most iconic and influential vehicles.

One Brand Has Been Leading That Shift For Close To A Decade

    2023 Toyota Prius front shotToyota

If you’ve noticed recently, the Toyota Prius is going through a rough patch. Well, that does come as a shock to most, for those who have their ear to the ground in the automotive community, who know that Toyota has been skimming for years to include hybrid-only powertrains in their lineup. Therefore, with the market ever shifting to SUVs, it seemingly makes the Prius obsolete. When Toyota announced that the 2026 RAV4 would be hybrid only, it made sense, as the Camry recently dropped the V6 and went for hybrid only.

Toyota Has The Deepest Hybrid Experience

To bring it back to the Prius, Toyota truly is one of the only brands that was able to successfully mass market a hybrid electric vehicle before anybody else in the late 90s and early 2000s, thanks to the original Prius. With decades of experience like that, they have been able to not only improve upon their powertrain but even perfect it. The same core 2.5-liter hybrid system was introduced nearly a decade ago and is one of the smoothest and most capable systems you could ever hope for. It’s so good. In fact, according to Wards Auto, it accounts for nearly half of the total US sales for the hybrid and the plug-in hybrid.

Hybrid Take-Rates Have Climbed Year After Year

It’s really hard to shake a stick at Toyota’s hybrid conviction. By 2024, hybrid powertrains had sold 653,000 units out of 1.187 million sold worldwide, according to Road Genius. The fifth-generation hybrid’s sales were nearly half sold in the US. That also might be due to the fact that the plug-in hybrid variant is literally one of the fastest Toyotas ever made, with a zero-to-60 time of 5.4 seconds. Partly because they’re so reliable and can hit hundreds of thousands of miles, and partly because they have a smooth power transfer.

Toyota really said: if you want a 2026 RAV4, you better like hybrids. That is a serious call and consequential one that could end up paying off in the end, as you can already see them in droves on the road right now. S&P Global Mobility’s associate director for AutoIntelligence even commented on the change, saying, “I don’t think it will hurt anything.” You know that’s a big deal when even someone of that knowledge and stature has that positive a thing to say about the most popular-selling SUV in the U.S.

    The Gas-Only RAV4 Is Discontinued

At this rate, based on everything we’ve already said, the Toyota RAV4 is the brand’s volume leader. If you absolutely must have the gas-powered-only version, you can still get it in the 2025 and older models, but not from here on out. As of the writing of this article, the plug-in-hybrid variants have just started to come on sale in the US, with pricing starting around the low to mid $40,000. Most people, however, will go for the standard hybrid that will start at $31,900.

Hybrid And Plug-Ins Are Now Straight Paths Forward

The Toyota RAV4 will now span across ten different configurations between the HEV and the PHEV. There’s even a new GR Sport version that may make the RAV4 PHEV even more fun to drive with a 5.7-second zero-to-60 time. The rugged Woodland, on the other hand, offers the complete opposite with different body cladding, including a different-looking front grille. Plus, a slightly higher ground clearance thanks to its all-terrain tires, giving you the ability to take it off the beaten path.

If you weren’t convinced before by the new trims, the bulletproof powertrain based on tenured history, then maybe you can be sold on the cold hard data. The 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid makes its case on outperforming the previous generation, which doesn’t require a premium price tag like some hybrids right now command. As it stands, the current RAV4 offering might be one of the most complete value propositions in the segment.

    No Dearth Of Power

    2026 Toyota RAV4 engineToyota

The powertrain for the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is virtually the same four-cylinder that you’ve come to find in it from years past, but vastly improved. Its output figures (226 horses in the FWD model and 236 when you opt for AWD) showcase a meaningful step forward over not only the gas-powered RAV4s of yesteryear, but also the Hybrids. It’s not much, but any improvement is a good improvement.

    The Safety Standard

Efficiency matters, but so does safety. Every 2026 Toyota RAV4 comes standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense 4.0. This new update includes pre-collision detection, lane tracing assist, among others that we’re going to list below:

    • Pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection
    • Lane Tracing Assist with 3D object recognition
    • Adaptive cruise control
    • Blind Spot Monitoring (standard)
    • Safe Exit Assist
    • Rear and side cross-traffic alert

Therefore, not only are they making the hybrid powertrain more powerful and fuel-efficient than previous generations, but they’re also making it safe. Not to mention, the interior and exterior design have improved. There’s really nothing you could do that would prevent hordes of people from wanting one.
