The Next Nurburgring Record Holder Could Come From California

The Most Amazing Convertible At Monterey Is This Locally Built 1,250-HP Hypercar

Forget about the Mustang GTD versus the Corvette ZR1X and their record attempts at the most hotly contested track in Germany. Another American car company that has been snapping up fast times from Ford and Chevy all over the US is now looking at taking the show to the Green Hell.

Czinger seems to be getting ready to go searching for glory at the Nürburgring, and crushing everyone else on the market.

    Czinger Loves Breaking Lap Records

California-based supercar company Czinger has been snapping up track records wherever it can with the 21C hypercar. It has the production records at Goodwood, Laguna Seca, Circuit of the Americas, Willow Springs, and plenty of others.

That’s with the hardtop car. Czinger just revealed the convertible model during Monterey Car Week, and it seems like the company is open to exploring more than just blue skies with the latest version of its 3D-printed supercar. It has already taken its cars to the Nürburgring, a nearly 13-mile layout of twists, turns, and hills, where the world’s fastest cars can really show their stuff. Company boss Lukas Czinger said that the data from those laps has the team thinking big.

“We were able to run a couple fast sections and look at our sims and say, ‘Hey, if we extrapolated that to [a] full lap, how are we doing?'” Czinger told Road & Track. “And the short answer is… we’ve definitely got a chance, and we’d like to take it.”

The convertible 21C Spyder has all the same performance parts as the coupe. The same 2.9-liter twin-turbo V8 and trio of electric motors make 1,250 combined horsepower. It generates 3,267 pounds of downforce at 150 mph with the roof open. Plus, the open-top car has been put through a full regimen of crash testing, just like the coupe.

Could A Record Attempt Happen Before The Next Car Week?

Czinger won’t be making the flight over to Germany for a record run soon, though. Czinger told Road & Track that it could take a year before anything happens. If anything happens.

Renting a track like Laguna Seca isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s attainable. Getting a day at the Nürburgring, which hosts tourists events as well as being home to nearly every German automaker’s test programs plus plenty of other go-fast attempts and even full-on races, is tough and expensive.

Czinger will need to be sure it is ready and then carefully make its plans. It almost certainly can’t afford bad weather leading to a lousy lap and requiring a second trip, like Ford experienced with the GTD.

The company will also need a driver who knows the track. The circuit can take hundreds of laps to learn properly, and those with experience and pace aren’t always made available to the competition.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

Czinger places enormous value on its lap times, even trading blows with Koenigsegg to make sure it can stay on top. Going to the Nürburgring could give it the ultimate high card on the spec sheet, but it would have to be seriously quick.

The current production car record is a 6:29, set by Maro Engel in a Mercedes-AMG One. The next fastest would be a 6:43, set by a Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey driven by Lars Kern in 2021. If Czinger can’t beat both of those, thereby crushing the Mustang GTD and Corvette ZR1X, it will have been a very expensive and very embarrassing failure.

But we can’t wait to see the company try.
