The Mustang Sedan Is Real, And Ford Is Already Showing It Off To Dealers

Even the thought of a Ford Mustang with an actual B-pillar and four door handles must be hard to swallow for Mustang lovers, especially those original owners who were among the nearly half-million people who bought a notchback coupe or convertible within the first 12 months after Dearborn’s two-door pony car went on sale in 1964.

But these are interesting times we live in, and the runaway popularity of crossovers and SUVs of all sizes tells automakers that more functionality, a roomy second row, and more cargo space in the back will move the metal more readily than a limited-purpose sports car with two doors. There’s a good reason why the Honda Accord coupe went away in 2017 and why the Toyota Camry coupe lasted only three years (from 1994 to 1996, barely making 2% of Camry sales.)

Mustang is still here, but its sales are a shadow of what they used to be. Could two extra doors help with that?

    Porsche Panamera Comparisons

So here we are, once again hearing chatter about a four-door Mustang – this time at a private meeting last week with Ford dealers in Las Vegas who got to see a prototype while hearing from CEO Jim Farley and other Ford executives about the product strategy going forward, according to Automotive News.

Camera phones were not allowed, so we have no photographic evidence of what the dealers saw. Renderings here from our colleagues at HotCars offer a taste of what a four-door pony might be like.

Dealers described the concept as resembling a Porsche Panamera. Ford execs at the private meeting said the four-door Mustang would offer more rear-seat space than the Panamera and have a starting price below $40,000, likely starting in 2028, Automotive News reports. That compares to a $35,000 base price (with destination) for a 2026 Mustang EcoBoost coupe.

Maybe It’s Time For The Mach 4

Ford did not discuss a name for the four-door pony car, but CarBuzz reported when the Blue Oval took out a trademark on the name “Mach 4” in February 2025. Dealers at the Las Vegas meeting also told Automotive News they saw early mock-ups of a small crossover to ostensibly replace the departed Escape, starting around $25,000. That’s in addition to the newly named Ford Fathom electric pickup truck coming next year with a starting price below $30,000, even including destination charges.

Why would Ford mess with the success of the two-door Mustang while potentially igniting a firestorm of protest from purists? Well, no one’s saying the two-door ‘Stang would go away. But there are business reasons why a four-door Mustang makes sense.

    Dodge Tandem Set The Template

Consider the four-door Dodge Charger, which consistently outsold the two-door Challenger while both cars quite successfully flew the muscle-car flag until 2023, when it came time to retire them both. When the Charger was reintroduced in 2025, it offered both two-door and four-door body styles, which still leaves room for another Challenger if that nameplate is to find new life.

And how about the rumors of a four-door Chevy Camaro as a grown-up family sedan, perhaps taking the place of the departed Chevrolet Malibu? From 2018 to 2023, the four-door Charger outsold the Camaro every single year, so the business case for a four-door Camaro probably isn’t that hard to make – so long as a two-door variant comes along, too.

The bottom line is, the Dodge tandem with two muscle car body styles found a much larger audience, which explains why together they outsold both the Mustang and Camaro every year after 2008 in the US.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

With the arrival of the current Dodge Charger as a four-door and two-door offering, it’s not a massive leap to see how Ford could try something similar with the Mustang. Heck, there’s already a four-door Mustang, unless you dismiss the all-electric Mustang Mach-E as a pretender. And who doesn’t want a little more room in the second row?

Besides, the four-door sedan isn’t as frumpy and conservative as it used to be when the three-box sedan body style literally looked like three boxes. The Panamera and others opened the door to a long, flowing roofline tapering down to the liftgate for a coupe-like silhouette. Need more evidence? Look at the rooflines of the current Accord and Camry, which combined for nearly a half-million sales last year in the US. Yes, only as sedans.
