Will VW ID. Buzz Survive Long Enough To Battle A Production E-Space?
We’ve updated this article with information and insight on the VW ID. Buzz, the primary competitor to the E-Space Concept if Renault puts the van into production.
The Renault Espace is famous for pioneering the minivan in Europe, with the first generation launching way back in 1984, just one year after Chrysler introduced the pivotal Plymouth Voyager. Five more generations followed, with the latest, unveiled in 2023, adopting a more SUV-like design. Essentially a stretched version of Renault’s Austral compact SUV, it marked a major departure from the Espace’s traditional formula.
Espace devotees certainly weren’t pleased, but Renault looks set to rectify that later this month at the 2026 Paris Motor Show by unveiling a new Espace minivan concept.
Volkswagen ID. Buzz Better Look Out

Renault has provided a first look at the Renault E-Space Concept set to debut in the French capital. The design blends retro cues from the first- and second-generation Espace minivans, but at the same time feels thoroughly modern with its streamlined, almost sculpted appearance and LED detailing. We can also see that conventional side mirrors have been replaced by rearward-facing cameras.
The powertrain is also modern. The separation of the E from Espace in the name signifies that the concept uses an electric powertrain, a technology Renault brands as E-Tech. Renault hasn’t provided any information on the powertrain itself, but the automaker earlier this year announced its new RG EV Medium 2.0 modular platform for EVs up to the midsize segment, featuring LFP batteries and capable of integrating a range-extender.
Combine the electric powertrain with an 185-inch length and retro vibes, and it’s clear the E-Space could be a major threat to the similarly retro Volkswagen ID. Buzz, which in standard-wheelbase form measures just half an inch more in Europe. Renault says its design also stands out because of its modularity, a feature of the original Espace and an area where the ID. Buzz is somewhat lacking.
We can’t be certain just yet, however, as Renault hasn’t provided specifics on the E-Space Concept, including whether production is planned or not. The automaker says we’ll have to wait until the October 12 opening day of the Paris Motor Show to find out more.

There’s no question the ID. Buzz is a cool retro van, but its lengthy run-up to production and expensive price tag have put a damper on the excitement. It launched in Europe in 2022 – two years before reaching US markets – and that initial sticker price was approximately 64,000 Euros. When the US launch did finally happen, it was technically a 2025 model-year van with a starting price of around $60,000. However, the exclusive 1st Edition was the only version available at launch, and it was $65,000 with only about 230 miles of range.
The van has fared better in Europe, where the shorter version is offered at a lower price point and as a work van. Approximately 53,000 were sold in the region in 2025, but the Buzz is presently on hiatus in the US until the 2028 model year. If Renault has production ambitions for the E-Space Concept, it would seem there’s room in the Euro market to be a proper ID. Buzz competitor. And the VW is likely to stick around for the foreseeable future.
What Else Has Renault Planned For Paris?

The E-Space Concept won’t be the only attraction on Renault’s stand, which will cover almost 27,000 square feet at the 2026 Paris Motor Show. Among the other highlights will be the new Twingo E-Tech electric subcompact hatch with its Twingobay panoramic glass roof. It’s designed to flood the cabin with natural light while filtering out up to 99.9% of UV rays and most infrared radiation.
Renault will also pay tribute to its performance heritage with the Renault 8 Gordini Concept. The electric, two-seat coupe reimagines the legendary 1960s Renault 8 Gordini with racing-inspired proportions and styling cues drawn from the original. Renault says the concept is strictly a tribute, but we sure hope it makes production.

Rounding out the highlights will be an updated Megane E-Tech electric compact SUV, which gains a sharper exterior design along with a new 67-kilowatt-hour LFP battery promising more range and quicker charging. Additional updates include an improved infotainment system with Google built-in and support for the Gemini assistant.
CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters
Renault appears to understand that electric vehicles don’t have to be anonymous appliances. The likely production-bound E-Space and cutesy Twingo E-Tech show the automaker is willing to give its EVs distinctive designs and plenty of character while retaining the practical benefits of electrification, including efficient powertrains, quiet cabins, and generous interior space.
Sadly, the US misses out, and there’s no sign Renault plans to return to these shores anytime soon.
