Despite putting the project on hold, Polestar is reportedly very close to finalizing its Porsche 911 rival. According to Edmunds reporting, development of the Polestar 6 is pretty much done, so even though the sports car has been delayed, it’ll be a very short journey from confirmation to production. Even before that happens, the Swedish EV manufacturer might be able to pay off the convertible’s development costs, repurposing the platform for use under a high-performance SUV to battle the Porsche Cayenne Electric.

We first reported last year that Polestar was deprioritizing the launch of its sports car to focus its energy on a small, electric SUV to slot below the 4 and bring the cost of entry for a Swedish performance EV down a bit. Confusingly, the crossover that predates the Polestar 6 will be called the Polestar 7, while a next-generation Polestar 2 will arrive after that not using the sequential Polestar 8 moniker.

That model shuffle means we may have to wait until 2028 or 2029 to get our mitts on the sleek, targa-top sports car, which is almost completely done with its development. That’s according to Polestar Global Head of Product Communications Graeme Lambert, who told Edmunds that all that’s left is to design the hardtop convertible mechanism and unique rear seats, since much of the Polestar 6’s structure and mechanicals will be common to the already developed 5 super-sedan.

That includes the company’s aluminum-intensive Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA), in-house-developed P10 electric motors, and new 800-volt electrical architecture, all of which will give sedan and roadster alike 884 horsepower and 350-kilowatt charging speeds. The Polestar 6 will borrow almost all of its fastback sibling’s mechanical and interior components wholesale, with the only redevelopment needed on the aforementioned seats and roof.

Focusing On Profit Before Performance
Although Polestar EVs tend to be a bit more enthusiastic and entertaining to drive than many of their contemporaries, we’re still sad to learn that the speedy 6 is being delayed despite being 95 percent done, especially since the reason is that the company wants another crossover in its lineup. But the reality is that a small SUV will drive higher sales volumes and potentially more profit, as well as bring development costs down for the company’s future EVs. Lambert told Edmunds that nailing the launch of the Polestar 7 and second-generation Polestar 2 will help drive the company forward and prepare it to enter the high-luxe world of flagship EVs.

Speaking of, the PPA platform should see additional life in products beyond Polestars 5 and 6. Lambert intimated that the robust, bonded aluminum superstructure could be adapted to a high-performance SUV, and if true, that would give the automaker an electrically powered foil to the Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne, as well as a direct competitor to the all-new Cayenne Electric.
Whenever it arrives, the Polestar 6 will likely carry a base price of $200,000, putting it in the rarefied stratum of open-air EVs currently occupied by the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore and nothing else. The Swedish company is prepared to keep up with demand for the 5 and 6, rather than limiting their production to a certain number of units.
