UPDATE: 2026/06/15 11:40 EST BY SEAN MCMANUS

What if FJ Cruiser Prices Are Still Too High for Your Budget?

Added a section on a more affordable alternative to the FJ Cruiser that retains Toyota reliability, capability, and more.

When it comes to off-roaders, Toyota has been at the forefront of rugged all-terrain vehicles for decades. Their penchant for off-road prowess can be traced back to the introduction of the Land Cruiser in 1951, over seven decades ago. Since then, Toyota nameplates such as the Land Cruiser and 4Runner have been the most venerable off-roaders produced by the Japanese automaker.

The FJ Cruiser fetched quite a pretty penny in previous years, but recently, its used values have started to decline, creating a perfect buying opportunity. Two years ago, finding a Toyota FJ Cruiser under $50,000 meant accepting high mileage and questionable modifications. Today, clean examples with 75,000 miles sell for $28,000, creating the first real buying opportunity since the model disappeared in 2014.

Why The FJ Is A Great Buy Now

A Front Shot Of A 2011-2014 Toyota FJ CruiserToyota

If you bought an FJ back before the used market went haywire in 2021, you lucked out because once those post-COVID-19 automobile prices hit, the FJ’s value skyrocketed to as much as $60k in early 2022. Incredibly, from August 2020 to January 2022, the FJ gained over $12,000 in value. Having a mass-market vehicle produced by a legacy brand gain that much value so quickly was unheard of before the used market’s unprecedented value increase in late 2021.

Some of the reasons experts attributed the skyrocketing prices to include:

    • Great standard off-roading capabilities, and the increased popularity of car-based adventures during COVID
    • Simple, straightforward tech and features make it an easy car to use daily
    • FJ Cruisers are rare, so enthusiast demand drove prices up
    • Toyota’s reputation for reliability and durability made this a desired investment for a second car

The massive increase in prices a couple of years ago peaked with some auction houses reporting prices of over $80,000 for pristine examples back in 2022.

To be fair, it only has 63 miles on the clock.

However, in 2025, the FJ’s values have begun to dip again. The current used car market suggests pricing ranges from between $15k to $35k these days. Some really low mileage examples still demand a $50,000 premium, but a clean car with between 50,000 and 100,000 miles on the clock costs in the region of $35,000. A lot of these cars have been modified with overlanding kit, which is an added bonus.

The dive in values also coincides with the introduction of the new Land Cruiser. Because of the Land Cruiser’s retro-futuristic looks and macho presence, it takes away some prospective buyers from considering a used FJ Cruiser. The 2026 Land Cruiser starts at $57,200, making it difficult for the older FJ Cruiser to ask for similar money. Sure, there are collectors out there who would still pay big money for an FJ with delivery mileage, but everyone else would just buy a new 4Runner or Land Cruiser.

Despite a decrease in value, the FJ Cruiser is still a car that should be considered collectible. It’s a great investment that will run forever, can take you and your family wherever you want to go, and still look unlike anything else on the road.

FJ Cruiser: Toyota’s Retro Off-Roader Wasn’t Around Very Long

Quick Facts About The Toyota FJ Cruiser

    • Produced from 2006 to 2022, but only on sale in the US between 2007 and 2014
    • Only lasted a single generation
    • Part of Toyota’s Rugged Youth Utility (RYU) concept
    • Four years of development went into the production model

In the early 2000s, Toyota saw a gap in their market among young men who were interested in off-roading. At the time, their SUV lineup started with the Toyota RAV4, a small SUV considered by many to be too refined for the macho outdoors they wanted to conquer. The off-roaders on offer included the 4Runner, which was beginning to resemble a family hauler for more mature audiences, thereby alienating the younger audience. So, in 2003, Toyota embarked on a quest to design a masculine off-roader for the younger crowd. That model would end up being the FJ Cruiser.

In order to legitimize the FJ’s appeal to the younger generation, the chief exterior designer responsible for sculpting the final production model’s looks was 24-year-old Jin Won Kim, fresh from design school. Upon its debut at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show, public reception of the conceptual FJ was overwhelmingly positive, leading to Toyota’s swift decision to put the FJ into production. However, extensive redesigns delayed the project until 2007.

Once the FJ was released, it quickly became a hit. However, by 2009, the FJ’s sales numbers in the US had declined sharply, from roughly 55,000 per year in 2007 to just 11,000 per year. Sales of the FJ never recovered in any meaningful way, and by 2014, Toyota had axed the nameplate due to its rapid decline in popularity. The FJ continued to be produced for other markets, such as Japan, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand.

    Specs And Features

As for what makes the FJ Cruiser move, Toyota employed the use of a single V6 to do the job throughout the FJ’s sixteen-year lifespan. Early on in its life, Toyota was concerned that some of the FJ’s falling popularity at the end of the 2000s was due to poor fuel economy. The decision was made to upgrade its single Variable-Valve Timing (VVT-i) system with a dual VVT-i system. This slightly improved fuel economy, but not by a significant amount.

Toyota offered a choice between a five-speed automatic transmission and a six-speed manual, with the manuals being significantly rarer in the US market. It also boasts a fully-independent suspension setup at both the front and back. Toyota debuted a new version of their A-TRAC system on the FJ, which uses front wheel braking during episodes of lost traction to mimic the operation of a locking differential. Rear-wheel drive was standard, with four-wheel drive being an option.

    The FJ’s Competition

It can be argued that the FJ’s styling put it into a class of its own. But it still needed to compete with other respected off-roaders from its homeland and across the seas. Two of the FJ’s closest competitors, the Nissan Xterra and the Jeep Wrangler, offered both retro-ish styling and tried-and-true off-roading heritage. But, it being a Toyota, it was well-prepared for a face-off with both. Here’s how it stacks up:

    Nissan Xterra (1999 – 2015)

The Nissan Xterra was brought into the fold at the turn of the millennium. At the time, Nissan wanted to modernize its lineup, and was interested in expanding their off-roader offering list to include something more modern. For 15 years, the Xterra sat in the middle of Nisan’s SUV lineup, and enjoyed modest sales at the start of its life. Towards the end, the Xterra began to lose popularity, and NIssan decided to give it the ax following the 2015 model year. Let’s compare their specs below:

Next on the FJ’s list is the Jeep Wrangler, one of the most quintessential off-roaders to ever ford the world’s streams. The Wrangler’s design is based on one that’s been used for over 80 years, dating back to the beginning of World War II. Its rugged and simple heritage is still being thought about when new ones are designed, although Jeep has strayed a bit from the original formula. When it comes to its performance compared to the FJ Cruiser, it’s got more flex to it with higher levels of approach, departure, and breakover angles, but it’s a bit lower to the ground.

The FJ Cruiser might be dropping in value, but many examples in good condition are still fairly expensive. With average examples hovering around $20k-$35k, buyers who are new to off-roading might be intimidated by its costs. That said, a reliable, capable alternative is the 3rd-generation 4Runner. Some pristine low-mileage examples sold for astonishingly-high amounts recently, but that’s not common. The average N180 (as the 3rd-gen is known internally) is worth about $16,000 these days, according to Classic.com’s data from auctions and sales over the last twelve months.

Some have a basic J-pattern shifter, others have a button and a lever to engage 4wd, and some come with a special function called Multi-Mode that includes a center differential.
