- The new model would be Firefly’s sixth special edition, extending its strategy of using small-batch design variants to sustain market interest.
- Firefly delivered 5,771 vehicles in July, up 143.9% year-on-year but down 16.9% from June.
Firefly, the premium compact electric vehicle (EV) brand of Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO), hinted that it may launch a new special-edition model on Friday, August 28.
Firefly posted a teaser video on Weibo on Thursday featuring themes of the southern Italian coast, summer and the ocean. It also used the Italian word “spiaggia,” meaning beach.
The video evokes a vacation atmosphere with ocean waves, citrus and sun-warmed fabrics, but does not show the vehicle’s exterior.
Firefly has not disclosed further details. The potential new variant would be the brand’s sixth special-edition model.
Firefly has previously launched special editions including Nomadic Maillard, Night Creature, Pegasus Rhapsody, Retro-Futurism and Pixel Player, with production runs ranging from 99 to 666 units.
These models are typically differentiated from regular versions through exclusive paint colors, decals, wheels and interior details, while their powertrains have largely remained unchanged.
The Pixel Player special edition launched in June was limited to 333 units and priced at 135,800 yuan ($20,020), a 13.4% premium over the regular model’s starting price. It sold out less than 8 hours after sales opened.
Firefly also launched the design-led Halo series in July. Its first model, Habitat, was priced at 133,300 yuan, further reinforcing the role of design in its product marketing.
Frequent special-edition launches help Firefly maintain visibility without adding an entirely new model. The strategy also allows the brand to test consumers’ acceptance of different design themes and price premiums.

Deliveries totaled 34,943 vehicles in the first 7 months of the year, bringing cumulative deliveries to 74,357, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
The brand gained access to Nio’s fifth-generation battery swap network for the first time on August 7, addressing a previous limitation that prevented the model from using swap stations because of its short wheelbase.
The starting price for the new model is 133,300 yuan ($19,680), which is 11% higher than that of the standard Firefly EV.
