Volvo designed the 50-ton class EC500 Electric to deliver the same performance as the diesel-powered EC500 the brand’s customers know and love – but saying that is one thing. Proving it? That’s another thing, entirely.

The new EC500 Electric is significantly bigger than the company’s 30-ton EC230 Electric, and it’s so new that it’s not even in production yet. Not really, anyway – but the first pre-production units aren’t just ready, they’re doing real work today. And, by testing the machine in live working environments, Volvo says it will be able to gather detailed feedback on the excavator’s behavior, performance, and operator experience as it makes its way towards production and more practical job site integration.

“This collaborative approach ensures that the machine is developed not only around technical considerations,” reads the Volvo press copy, “but around the day-to-day requirements of customers working in some of the most demanding applications.”

    Real-world ready

The new Volvo EC500 Electric is equipped with both an on-board high-voltage battery good for between two and three hours of continuous use, but offers the ability to operate ’round-the-clock thanks to a 35 m cable reel that allows the 50-ton class machine to connect to grid power. That plug connection means the machine can operate shift after shift without recharging, but grid power isn’t always something you can take for granted.

“We say it all the time, but it’s true,” says Mike Switzer, a heavy equipment fleet buyer and co-host of The Heavy Equipment Podcast. “Just because you’re working for the company, that doesn’t mean you have power.”

Volvo gets it, and the EC500 Electric’s intelligent battery-electric system is designed to adapt to various grid conditions on a 400V base, helping customers manage the practical realities of job site power fluctuations and providing greater flexibility while reducing the demands placed on job site power infrastructure.

The first EC500 Electric in customer hands is currently being put to work in Norway across a series of demanding applications like quarrying, road building, and tunneling. The ongoing test program is designed to feed real-world job-site feedback directly into the final stages of development, with early data from the pilot already shaping the product’s refinement before Volvo officially launches the production version in Spring, 2027.
