The recent trend toward ruggedized crossovers will claim yet another victory in the form of an off-road special edition of the Mini Countryman. The automaker teased the new version of the compact SUV on Facebook today by way of a blurred image, perhaps of the Countryman traversing a rock-strewn stream or snowy glacier. The biggest Mini – which is still pretty small by modern standards – also looks like it gets some trim-specific equipment to help it survive off the beaten path.
Although details are scarce at the moment, we won’t have to wait long to learn more, as the Mini Countryman special ediiton will bow tomorrow.

This Mini Is Built To Rival Subaru And Jeep
The Subaru Wilderness sub-brand and Jeep’s Trailhawk line of crossovers are arguably the biggest rivals to the forthcoming Mini. If the British-German automaker follows their lead, we expect the Countryman to receive a slight suspension lift, hopefully with off-road–specific shocks and springs for improved control in rough conditions.
We also expect the new Mini to borrow some of the electronic programming tweaks from its parent company BMW, which gave the X5 Silver Anniversary Edition a sophisticated terrain management system that could handle rocks, sand, gravel, and snow. Such a system wouldn’t be enough to give the Countryman the sort of capability that a low-range transfer case can provide, but to be fair, it would match the kind of functionality that Subaru gives to the Crosstrek Wilderness and Jeep to the Compass Trailhawk.
Is The Off-Road Countryman Getting More Features?
Although it’s almost impossible to tell from the blurred teaser image, Mini is going to add some more functionality to the Countryman with some additional features, as well as any rumored mechanical changes. In an earlier teaser featuring a camouflaged prototype, the off-roader wore high-rise roof towers to give it plenty of clearance for a rooftop tent, which is also just barely visible in the blurred teaser image. The roof rack would also be a convenient mounting point for snowboards or ski equipment.

Other exterior changes are minimal, if any. Squinting at the camouflaged prototype from July reveals a front bumper that looks identical to that of the regular Countryman S All4; ditto the rear bumper and tow hitch. The prototype’s John Cooper Works wheels are also available on the wider Mini lineup, so we doubt there’s too much special going on with the rolling stock apart from the knobby all-terrain tires.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:
All that said, good rubber is usually the difference between a decent off-roader and a mediocre one, so combined with what we presume will be a few suspension and tuning changes, the Mini special edition should be capable enough – especially considering the automaker will field it in the challenging 2026 Rebelle Rally that begins later this week. Whether it’ll be reasonably priced is another question. The entry-level, 241-horsepower Countryman S All4 model starts at $41,250 with destination, while the 312-hp Countryman JCW is another $8,000 on top of that.

We’d expect the off-road pack to add around $3,000 to the base price, which would make it quite a bit more expensive than either the $35,215 Crosstrek Wilderness or $38,455 Forester Wilderness; ditto the $36,055 Compass Trailhawk. A $45,000 Mini off-roader may not be to everyone’s tastes, even if it can handle the occasional camping or fishing trip.
