Lucid’s smaller Cosmos SUV, slated for 2026, has been pushed back to 2027

Lucid’s upcoming “mid-size” Cosmos SUV, which it had said would come out later this year, will now not launch until at least 2027.

Lucid just filed its Q2 earnings report today, announcing a wider-than-expected loss and a slight miss on revenue. The company declined to update its 2026 guidance, with its new CEO touting an “operational reset” to try to improve the company’s financial standing.

Lucid says that it identified $1.4 in cash flow improvement opportunities (including working on reducing capital expenditures and vehicle inventory) for the rest of this year, and thinks that a new organizational structure implemented alongside last month’s C-suite shakeup will help it going forward.

But it seems that one part of that “operational reset” will have to do with the Lucid Cosmos, the upcoming mid-size SUV that had been planned for the latter half of this year, but which we as of yet have had little information on.

Many were skeptical that the model, only revealed in silhouettes earlier this year, would come to market just months from now – especially when Lucid has only been delivering significant numbers of its Gravity SUV for about a year now (a few were delivered in late 2024, but monthly deliveries only reached the triple-digits last September).

It turns out that skepticism was warranted, as alongside the Q2 results, Lucid’s new CEO Silvio Napoli said the Cosmos isn’t coming until next year. CNBC quoted Napoli thusly:

We’re not going to make the mistake of the past where products, great cars, were in fact tainted by launching before things were ready. I think it’s going to be ’27. … Most likely the second half of ’27.

So, looks like more like a year from now, or even a bit more than that, before anyone gets their hands on this car.

This certainly seems like a more realistic timeline, as Lucid took several years to go from even public concepts to production of their first vehicle, and the timeline wasn’t much shorter for the Gravity, either. So suggesting that Cosmos could go from a public silhouette to public sales within the same calendar year was questionable to begin with.

And yet, even with that timeline, the CEO left some wiggle room. He thinks it’s going to be 2027… so it could be later. And, it could be another situation where Lucid releases a few cars, then only sends them out in numbers several months later, as was the case with the Gravity.

Then, there is the issue of Lucid’s company health.

Lucid has recently been subject to rumors of imminent bankruptcy, which the company had to take the rare measure of publicly commenting on, stating that the rumors are false. The company repeated again today in its Q2 earnings that it has sufficient liquidity to carry it well into 2027 (and then, there’s always the Saudi support that seems to materialize any time Lucid needs a boost).

Despite that insistence that the company is healthy, this isn’t really the time to be rushing a new model. On the one hand, you need to make cars that can bring in revenue, but on the other hand, if you release a bad car before it’s ready, things might not go well.

So, alongside the operational reset, this seems like not just the expected choice, but a wise one. If the company can get its house in order, that will make for a better car than if it rushes something. Unfortunately, everyone will have to wait a little bit longer, but given we’ve really seen next to nothing about this car anyway, we’re sure you can handle a little more of a wait.
