The Daily Brief wraps up the biggest stories and our exclusive reporting on the auto industry and car culture.

Nothing makes an entrance like a helicopter gunship. A few days ago, an AH-64 Apache, one of the most powerful attack helicopters operated by the US Army, made a guest appearance at an Alabama car show. Fun idea, but the timing was a little off—quite a few cars were already staged when the Apache showed up to land. And as you’ll see in this video, you do not want to be anywhere near an AH-64’s landing site with a nicely painted car. Or, at all, really.

This clip from the 2026 Claybank Jamboree in Ozark, Alabama (floating around Reddit and Facebook) gives you a sense of the scene when the Apache swooped in with the subtlety of the Kool-Aid Man coming through a wall. Debris is flying, people are cowering, it looks pretty hectic.

An aviator friend of mine once told me, “A plane shakes hands with the air, a helicopter beats the air into submission.” That looks especially true on a heavy-hitter helicopter like an Apache. Those rotors are making so much thrust to keep the heavy gunship aloft that the downwash below it is downright dangerous.

The helicopter in the video is reportedly based at Fort Rucker, the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence (AVCOE), where U.S. Army pilots get trained. The Army has issued a statement “confirming that they were aware of damage caused by the helicopter and encouraging car owners to contact base authorities for a claim regarding their vehicles.”

It seems the helicopter was supposed to land before the public showed up, which makes sense, but a weather delay kept it from arriving as planned.

Our colleagues at Task & Purpose put this on our radar and got in touch with the show’s organizer directly. T&P Contributing Reporter Austin Campbell got context from Tyler Williams, founder of Wiregrass Carshows, which organized the car show as part of the town’s Claybank Jamboree festival. I’ll block-quote here:

    ###

“This time, the helicopter landed around the time our registration was wrapping up, and landed in a location closer to our parking area than it was supposed to be at,” said Williams, who added that the Army had provided helicopters as static displays at other shows. “In every other event, the helicopters have landed either before the car show or not at all.”

Williams said the car show is held in a public parking lot and that even without the event, vehicles would ordinarily have been parked in the area.

The Ozark Area Chamber of Commerce oversees the Jamboree and coordinates the locations of exhibits, including the helicopters, Williams said.

“Almost all cars were impacted in some way,” Williams said. “Windows were down and hoods were up as judging was about to begin, so exteriors and interiors were caked in dirt and debris.”

Williams said he could not speak to specific damage but received a claims form from Fort Rucker that he distributed to car show participants. He also insisted he was reserving judgment on whether the Army flight crew made a mistake.

“All of this is under the caveat that I am not assigning blame to any particular organization or person,” Williams said. “I don’t have access to any other context.”

    ###

Here’s an official note that went out to attendees on the weekend:

Williams also made a Facebook post with specific contact info for damage claims for those who had vehicles affected by the incident.

Luckily, I haven’t seen any injury reports while looking into this, and it looks like the show organizer is working to sort people out after the fact. Here’s hoping everybody’s car that was involved cleans up OK.
