Why Savvy Off-Road Buyers Are Choosing Leftover 2026 Land Cruisers Over The 2027 Model

It seems Toyota got excited this year. The 2027 Land Cruiser hit dealership lots a few months before new models typically arrive. It’s not all that outlandish, but it has created a unique issue for prospective Land Cruiser buyers due to the model’s changing price metric. At the same time, both the 2026 and 2027 LCs are now competing for the same spotlight, and one is significantly cheaper than the other.

A base-spec 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser 1958 carries a starting price of $57,600, with a median sale price hovering right around $70,653. However, a base 2027 model carries a much higher median asking price, which sits right around $72,835. We can’t definitively say that the ’27 model is overpriced just yet, but its higher asking price doesn’t necessarily translate into a better overall value.

The 2027 Land Cruiser Arrived Far Earlier Than What’s Normal

As early as spring of this year, 2027 Land Cruisers began appearing on Toyota dealer lots. Typically, automakers will wait until around Q3 or Q4 to begin releasing next-year models to the public. By September 20th, over 2,120 active 2027 Land Cruiser listings were live across the internet. This suggests that the model’s early release wasn’t just a small batch of early-production arrivals.

If you dig deeper into those listings, you’ll find many marked as “Sale Pending” or “In Transit,” meaning they’ve already been sold or haven’t even hit the lot yet. This brings an additional sense of reality into the mix, as those 2,120 found listings nationwide aren’t just advertising ploys. Current auto manufacturing regulations permit carmakers to begin producing next-year models as early as January 2nd of the previous year, so Toyota is technically within its rights to sell 2027 LCs earlier than usual.

Most brands choose to wait until late summer, fall, or early winter to release next-year models, largely due to factors such as existing inventories on dealership lots. Toyota simply didn’t seem to care about such things and went ahead anyway. Being Toyota, though, there’s likely a method to the madness. Production schedules, inventory planning, and even supply chain efficiency all determine the right time to release a new model, meaning these lined up well enough for Toyota’s top brass to give the ’27 LC the go-ahead.

Other automakers have been following their own trends that have been muddying the typical next-year-model release schedule. Some models have been delayed, while others, like the Land Cruiser, come early. For consumers, the new model timing confusion means the old-school thought process of “wait until fall” is no longer universally viable. Instead, we have to figure out for ourselves when a particular automaker — such as Toyota — decides to introduce its newest model.

The 2026 Land Cruiser Has One Huge Advantage: A Lower Price

At roughly $57,600, the ’26 Land Cruiser’s entry-level price is just slightly more attainable than the 2027’s $58,050 base price, giving more buyers the opportunity to own one. According to TrueCar, buyers are reporting a 1.8% reduction from sticker price on 2026 LC models, giving a slight added edge in its favor against newer 2027s. For those who don’t mind buying the “old” model, this can sweeten the deal.

As popularity mounts in the Land Cruiser’s case, prices tend to climb to match an increase in demand. Additionally, inflation needs to be offset, and increases in production costs and payroll must also be addressed. That’s why, by and large, no car remains at exactly the same price year over year. The Land Cruiser’s increase in base price is less than $500, but because it’s obviously newer than the 2026 model, dealers can be a bit less forgiving in the discount department, potentially adding to its $2,200-or-so uptick in median sale price.

The 2026 model retains many of the same goodies as the 2027 model offers. For example, it has the same exact 2.4-liter, 326-horsepower hybrid powertrain under the hood. It also looks the same, has virtually the same tech, and handles off-road terrain just as capably as its newer counterpart. For off-roaders who don’t particularly care whose machine is newest, opting for the 2026 model-year Land Cruiser nets nearly all the same features for a couple thousand dollars less.

Of course, the 2027 model-year Land Cruiser does justify its slight price increase. Heated and ventilated seats are now offered for second-row passengers, provided the Premium Package has been selected. It also features an optional high-mount air intake for deep-water wading. A new paint scheme is also found in the options book called “Inked”, which is a special black shade with silver flecks embedded in it. Are these few optional changes worth spending an extra couple thousand bucks? That question is best left up to individual buyers.

By And Large, The Land Cruiser’s Formula Remains Unchanged

Toyota didn’t simply place a boxy body on top of a soft off-roader and call it a Land Cruiser, as there’s serious pedigree underneath its skin. Both a locking central and rear differential are present, along with a function called Crawl Control. Engage it, and the Land Cruiser will manage acceleration and braking over challenging terrain, allowing the driver to focus solely on steering input.

It also features something called Multi-Terrain Select, which directs the LC to manage throttle and braking inputs in a way that maximizes traction and minimizes wheel spin over any difficult surface, such as snow, sand, mud, or grass. On top of that, the Land Cruiser offers something called a Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism (SDM). Should you find yourself in a situation where extreme front-wheel articulation is required, such as over large rocks, the SDM will prove useful by disconnecting the front sway bar, effectively unlocking the connection between the front left and right wheels.

The 2027 Model Has A Couple Of Other Differences

Its changes extend beyond the new snorkel intake, paint color, and second-row comfort, but not by much, as they are mainly refinements rather than components of a major overhaul. Toyota continues to offer its Safety Sense 3.0 driver assistance suite, which includes features such as Proactive Driving Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, and an Emergency Driving Stop System.

Those features aren’t exclusive to the 2027 model year, though. 2026 models offer the same TSS 3.0 technology, meaning buyers who choose the slightly cheaper model won’t be giving up any safety measures.

The Land Cruiser Proves That The Newest Model Isn’t Always The Best Deal Overall

Thanks to Toyota’s early-release strategy, buyers searching for a brand-new Land Cruiser and a good deal can now easily find one in the 2026 model. Traditionally, those who wanted the latest models needed to wait until around fall for next-year vehicles to arrive, but Toyota decided spring was the time for the LC to enter the public eye.

This means two types of buyers are served: those who want a deal, and those who want the newest car possible in their driveway. The Land Cruiser’s unique position doesn’t mean buyers should automatically choose the older or newer LC. Instead, each buyer needs to decide for themselves whether newness or bargain hunting is more important. Not to mention, buyers need to decide whether the 2027’s small uptick in standard and optional features is worth the roughly-$2k increase in price.

The early arrival of the Land Cruiser should not be taken as the new normal. Automakers are free to decide when to release next-year models, and many will likely continue to avoid releasing new variations early due to existing dealer inventory. However, should an early arrival occur – as with the 2027 Land Cruiser – buyers should do their research before automatically assuming the older model is a better deal and the newer one is more feature-rich.
