Genesis just revealed the GV90 this week, and it looks like it will be one of the most luxurious, indulgent flagship SUVs on the market. It’s available with pillarless coach doors, and even front seats that swivel around to turn the cabin into a posh lounge. As opulent as it seems, it could be even more so. That’s not just us talking. Hyundai recently published a patent for a little feature that could add yet more luxury to a future GV90.

Allow Me To Present Your Seatbelt

CarBuzz found this Hyundai patent (number 10 2025 136 231.9) filed with the German Patent and Trademark Office. It’s for a seatbelt guide, but a particularly fancy one. Instead of staying fixed in place, the guide loop extends outward on an arm. It’s signalled to extend when someone sits down on the seat. This way, the occupant doesn’t have to twist around and fumble for the belt. Instead, it’s positioned forward for easy locating and grasping. Naturally, it would retract when fastened, to keep the belt snug, and it would also retract after the passenger has unbuckled and exited, to keep the belt close to the seat in a more tidy placement.

It Would Be Perfect For The GV90 Neolun Or A Convertible

The patent drawings suggest that the main way this gizmo would be used would be in seat-mounted seat belts, rather than those mounted to a pillar. The whole mechanism would fit inside the seat back, unnoticed by occupants until it moved the belt forward. This particular design would be ideal for a car that requires seatbelts mounted to the seats due to a lack of a pillar to which the belts could mount.

Enter the GV90 Neloun. As we already mentioned, it’s available with a set of coach doors and with no B pillars with the Neolun trim. That means it has seat-mounted belts. Of course, it’s also necessary because those front seats turn around, and pillar or even ceiling-mounted belts would get tangled up in the seats. You’ll also find seat-mounted belts for the reclining rear seats of the Neolun. In both situations, a seatbelt that could be presented to the occupant would raise the luxuriousness to another level. Depending on where Hyundai might be in developing the mechanism, we think it could be implemented in the near future as a model-year update.

A wild pillarless SUV isn’t the only vehicle well-suited to this fancy seat belt device. Convertibles also lack any sort of pillar, and if they have rear seats, you don’t want the belt mounted to the interior walls because that will block access to the rear. Genesis doesn’t build any convertibles. However, it has been teasing convertibles for some time now.

Back in 2022, Genesis showed a convertible based on its X concepts, which were long, two-door models showcasing possibilities for the future of Genesis. It looked plausible as a production car back then, but even more so with an update in 2025. Whereas the original concept was a fanciful EV idea, the updated concept apparently was built off production G90 underpinnings, suggesting an even stronger potential for a production model. It would also be a great place to add the fancy seatbelts. Genesis even showed a Magma

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

We haven’t doubted that Hyundai has wanted to make Genesis a world-class luxury automaker, and it’s definitely a strong competitor with its current lineup. The GV90 Neolun, though, is production proof that the automakers don’t just want to be world-beating, but that they probably will be. The fact that Hyundai and Genesis are still developing even more fancy luxury features also shows that they have no intention of sitting on their laurels. They plan to remain leaders in luxury.
