Hyundai is on track for its sixth straight year of record sales in the US. In the EV market, Hyundai has its sights set on Chevrolet as it looks to become the second-best-selling brand behind Tesla.

Hyundai takes aim at Chevy for the #2 EV brand

After it went “5 for 5” in 2025, the Korean automaker is eyeing its sixth consecutive year with record sales.

Hyundai’s electrified vehicles continue to lead the growth. The all-electric IONIQ 5 consistently ranks among America’s top-selling EVs, alongside the Chevy Equinox EV, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.

In the first quarter, it was the fourth best-selling EV, behind the Toyota bZ, Tesla Model 3, and Model Y.

The IONIQ 5 has helped Hyundai close the gap with GM’s Chevrolet as the second-most-popular EV brand.

According to S&P Global Mobility (via Automotive News), Hyundai registered 4,936 electric vehicles in April 2026, up 3% from the year prior.

While Chevy remained in second place, just ahead of Hyundai, the brand’s EV registrations dropped by 36% to 5,890.

The brand’s top sellers logged very different results. Although specific numbers were not revealed, the report revealed that registrations for the Hyundai IONIQ 5 rose 15% from a year ago, while registrations for the Chevy Equinox EV fell 30%.

Chevrolet sells four electric vehicles in the US: the Equinox EV, Blazer EV, Silverado EV, and Bolt EV.

Hyundai sells the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, IONIQ 9, and Kona EV, but plans to discontinue the standard IONIQ 6 after the 2026 model year. Only the performance N model will remain on sale.

After the $7,500 federal tax credit expired at the end of September, Hyundai cut IONIQ 5 prices by up to $9,800 on select trims to offset the impact, and so far it’s paying off.

Starting at $35,000, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 is among the most affordable EVs on sale in the US. The upgraded model now features up to 318 miles of driving range, a built-in NACS port, and a refined interior.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 was recently named the “best-of-the-best EV” by Kelley Blue Book and the best family electric car for 2026.

With leases starting at just $259 per month in June, the 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5 is still one of the best, if not the best, deals you can get on a new EV right now.

Will Hyundai push past Chevy for #2? Toyota is also making a comeback with EV registrations surging 225% in April. We will find out soon as more sales data comes in.
