- The ES9 delivered 8,595 units in June, contributing 21.17% of Nio Inc’s deliveries for the month in its first full delivery month.
- The ES8 delivered 8,969 units, down 21.85% from the previous month, ending a streak of seven consecutive months above 10,000.
Nio Inc’s (NYSE: NIO) two flagship SUV (sport utility vehicle) models are becoming the dominant force in its delivery mix, though their performance diverges.
The new flagship SUV ES9 delivered 8,595 units in June, closing in on the 8,969 units of the mainstay ES8, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) compiled by CnEVPost.
June marked the ES9’s first full delivery month. The model was launched on May 27 and began deliveries on May 28, delivering 3,108 units in the last four days of May. On that basis, its June deliveries rose 176.54% from the previous month.
The ES9 contributed 21.17% of Nio Inc’s June deliveries and accounted for 39.23% of the Nio main brand’s deliveries.
The model has a starting price of 498,000 yuan ($73,250) for full purchase, falling to 390,000 yuan under the BaaS (battery as a service) battery rental scheme.
Nio announced on June 26 that cumulative ES9 deliveries had surpassed 10,000 units. It took only about 30 days from the start of deliveries to reach this milestone, setting a new record for the fastest deliveries of a premium all-electric model in the 500,000-yuan-class in the Chinese market.
By contrast, the ES8 cooled somewhat in June. The model delivered 8,969 units for the month, down 21.85% from the previous month, ending a streak of seven consecutive months with monthly deliveries above 10,000.

Still, compared with the older model in the same period last year, its deliveries rose 969.01% year-on-year.
Deutsche Bank analysts said in a research note earlier this month that weak ES8 deliveries were the main reason Nio’s overall June deliveries came in slightly below guidance, as some consumers chose to hold off and wait for the upcoming five-seat version.
The five-seat ES8 opened for pre-orders on June 28 and will be officially launched in an event that will begin at 7:30 pm Beijing Time on July 9. The version will sit alongside the existing six-seat and seven-seat versions, broadening the customer coverage of this mainstay model.
The third-generation ES8 starts at 406,800 yuan and is a high-gross-margin model, as well as a key factor driving Nio’s recent financial turnaround.
The model completed its 120,000th delivery on June 22, 275 days after the first batch of deliveries began at the end of September 2025.
The two flagship SUVs together delivered 17,564 units in June, accounting for 43.3% of Nio Inc’s total of 40,597 units for the month and 80.2% of the main brand’s 21,908 units.
Driven by this, the average transaction price of the Nio brand reached 443,000 yuan in June.
The strength of the flagship models also underscores the decline of other models. The ES6 SUV delivered 1,219 units in June, down 72.39% year-on-year; the ET5 Touring delivered 1,822 units, down 64.30% year-on-year; and the ET5 and EC6 delivered just 618 and 549 units, respectively.

Overall, Nio Inc delivered 40,597 units in June, up 62.88% year-on-year, a monthly high for the year. But its second-quarter total of 107,658 units fell short of the lower end of the 110,000 to 115,000 guidance range.
Sub-brands Onvo and Firefly delivered 11,743 and 6,946 units in June, respectively.
Despite the slight miss in June, Deutsche Bank still expects Nio to achieve non-GAAP breakeven in the second quarter, driven mainly by the contribution of its high-gross-margin flagship models. The bank estimates that the ES9’s non-cancelable order backlog exceeds 40,000 units.
The bank also noted that, given the significant price gap, there is no cannibalization between the ES9 and the ES8.
The ES8 is positioned as a family vehicle, competing with Li Auto’s (NASDAQ: LI) Li L8 and the Huawei-backed Aito M8; the ES9 is positioned as a business and executive vehicle, competing with the Aito M9 and Zeekr 9X.
Deutsche Bank said Nio’s June deliveries came in slightly below guidance, mainly because some customers were waiting for the upcoming five-seat ES8.
