Honda’s Most Powerful 4-Cylinder Engine Isn’t Even In A Honda

Honda has built its reputation on four-cylinder engines that punch well above their weight. It’s a lineage stretching from the screaming VTEC units of the 1990s — beloved for blending fuel efficiency with genuine performance — through to today’s sophisticated turbocharged mills. Whether powering a commuter sedan or a track-focused sports car, Honda’s four-pots have consistently redefined what’s possible from a compact engine, earning a devoted following for their impressive power density, reliability, and high-revving character. But here’s the twist: the most powerful four-cylinder Honda has ever put into a production car doesn’t wear a Honda badge at all.

The Most Powerful Honda 4-Cylinder Wears An Acura Badge

The most powerful 4-cylinder Honda engine in a series production car isn’t found in the Honda Civic Type R; it’s in the Acura Integra Type S. Technically, these two hot hatches utilize the same K20C engine, but Acura needed to do something to set the two apart, so it gave the Integra Type S an extra five horsepower over the Type R, which was already the most powerful Honda ever sold in the USA.

At the heart of the Acura Integra Type S lies the K20C8 engine, a close relative of the K20C1 found in the Civic Type R. While both engines share an identical design and technology, they feature different mounting points — which is why the K20C8 carries its own unique designation. The unit is an all-aluminum design with dual overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, and Honda’s VTEC variable valve timing system. With 320 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, it’s the most powerful four-cylinder engine Honda has ever produced, gaining its five-horsepower advantage over the Civic Type R through a high-flow exhaust system that liberates those extra ponies.

    The Potential For More Power

While the Integra Type S is already impressive, Honda Performance Division (HPD) has demonstrated the versatility of this platform by developing in-house tuned versions of the car. Equipped with upgrades such as an HPD Borla downpipe, turbo-back exhaust, and HPD/Hasport polyurethane engine mounts, the Integra Type S DE5 touring race car produces up to 360 hp and 340 lb-ft of torque.

That’s not road legal, but at 2024 Monterey Car Week, Acura unveiled the Integra Type S HRC Prototype, which adds twin oil coolers, a larger intercooler, and a lightweight cat-back exhaust. Acura declined to release official specs for the prototype, but similar modifications have been known to yield up to 30 additional horsepower with relative ease.

Integra Type S Vs. Civic Type R: What Are The Differences?

The Acura Integra Type S and Honda Civic Type R share a common heart: the K20C engine. However, these two vehicles offer distinctly different experiences despite their similar powertrains. The Civic Type R, long celebrated as one of the best front-wheel-drive performance cars, is built with a focus on track performance. It’s a car that prioritizes sharp handling, minimal weight, and maximum driver engagement.

With its 315-hp K20C1 engine, the Civic Type R is a beast on the track, delivering blistering acceleration and precise cornering. The Acura Integra Type S, by contrast, takes a more refined approach to performance — even as its extra 5 hp and high-flow exhaust system address the Civic Type R’s rather muted exhaust note. The Integra Type S brings more luxurious features and a more upscale interior, with premium materials and advanced technology that align with Acura’s brand positioning. Its suspension is also tuned to strike a balance between sporty handling and everyday ride comfort, making it a more livable daily driver than the sharper-edged Civic Type R.

When comparing the two, it ultimately comes down to what you prioritize in a performance car. The Civic Type R is the purist’s choice — a raw, engaging driving machine ideal for those who put performance above all else. The Integra Type S delivers comparable performance wrapped in greater comfort and refinement, at a corresponding price premium. Both cars stand as compelling proof of what the K20C engine is capable of, but they’re aimed at different kinds of enthusiasts.

    Notable Four-Pot Honda Sports Cars

Honda’s legacy of building powerful four-cylinder engines extends well beyond the Integra Type S and Civic Type R. The automaker has a long history of producing sports cars with remarkable four-cylinder engines that have become legends in their own right.

    Honda S2000

The Honda S2000, particularly the AP2 model produced from 2004 to 2009, is a prime example of Honda’s ability to craft a thrilling high-revving four-cylinder. The F22C engine in the US-spec S2000 is a naturally aspirated 2.2-liter unit producing 237 hp, but the headline figure barely tells the story — what makes it truly special is its ability to spin all the way to 9,000 RPM, delivering an exhilarating experience unlike almost anything else on the road. The F22C was among the most power-dense naturally aspirated 2.2-liter engines ever built, and it remains a favorite among enthusiasts and one of the greatest four-cylinder engines of all time.

    Honda Prelude SiR

The Honda Prelude SiR, particularly the fifth-generation model, is another standout four-cylinder Honda performance car. While the nameplate’s revival is confirmed, the original remains a legend in its own right, powered by the H22A 2.2-liter engine producing 217 horsepower. The Prelude SiR was celebrated for its blend of performance and style, and the H22A engine was central to its appeal. Its high-revving character and smooth power delivery made the Prelude SiR an engaging yet refined drive. The H22A remains one of the most beloved engines among Honda enthusiasts, a testament to its performance and long-term reliability.
