Honda appears ready to make hybrids the centerpiece of its North American lineup, and two of its biggest sellers could soon lose their traditional gas-only powertrains altogether. According to recent product-planning reports highlighted by Automotive News, the Honda Accord and Honda CR-V are expected to transition to hybrid-only lineups by the end of the decade. The strategy would closely mirror moves already made by Toyota with the Camry and the latest RAV4, reflecting just how quickly hybrids have shifted from being a niche alternative to becoming the mainstream choice for many buyers.
The Accord is reportedly set to make the change with its next major redesign. Honda’s current gas-only Accord is expected to remain in production until around the end of the decade, after which a new generation could rely exclusively on an updated version of Honda’s two-motor hybrid system. Honda has already confirmed a much broader hybrid offensive, with next-generation hybrid vehicles beginning to arrive in 2027 and 15 new hybrid models planned globally by the end of Honda’s fiscal year in March 2030, with North America serving as a major focus. That push comes as Honda redirects resources toward hybrids following a pullback from some of its more aggressive near-term EV plans.
The CR-V is expected to head in the same direction, which should not come as much of a surprise considering how important its hybrid models have become. Shoppers have increasingly embraced electrified versions of the CR-V, Accord, and Civic, giving Honda a strong business case for making hybrid technology standard rather than optional. Honda’s two-motor system has also become one of the company’s strongest powertrain offerings, providing the smooth around-town operation and fuel economy buyers want without asking them to change their driving or charging habits. For Honda, going hybrid-only with high-volume vehicles could be less of a gamble than it would have seemed just a few years ago.
Honda may not stop with its biggest sellers. Company product planners have acknowledged that there is no major technical barrier preventing smaller vehicles such as the HR-V or Acura ADX from adopting similar hybrid hardware. Nothing has been officially confirmed for a hybrid HR-V yet, but such a model would make plenty of sense against increasingly competitive entries like the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. Honda has also shown next-generation hybrid prototypes and says its future system will use a new platform and improved powertrain technology designed to deliver better efficiency while preserving the responsive driving character traditionally associated with the brand.
Then there is the Honda Element, a name that refuses to stay buried. Separate reports have suggested Honda could revive the boxy utility vehicle with hybrid power, potentially starting production in 2029. Honda has not officially confirmed the Element’s return, so that part of the future lineup should still be treated as speculation. Even so, the idea fits neatly into Honda’s emerging strategy. A rugged, practical hybrid crossover positioned around the HR-V and CR-V could appeal to buyers who want something more distinctive without stepping into a full-size SUV or EV. Whether the Element actually makes its comeback remains to be seen, but the broader direction is becoming clear. Honda is betting heavily that hybrids will carry its mainstream lineup through the end of the decade and well into the next one.
