Ford has officially pulled the wraps off the 2027 Explorer ST Sinister package, a factory-built, blacked-out variant designed as a direct nod to the modification culture that has grown up around the ST badge. The package is available to order now, with dealer deliveries expected later this year.

Built on the Explorer ST’s proven 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 — still rated at 385 horsepower — the Sinister package doesn’t touch the powertrain. Instead, it goes after the aesthetics hard, wrapping the SUV in a head-to-toe blacked-out treatment that looks closer to a tuner build than a factory order sheet.

What the Sinister Package Actually Includes

The visual package centers on a fully blacked-out exterior, but a few details set it apart from a basic black paint job. Up front, exclusive amber LED daytime running lamps replace the standard white units — a small but distinctive touch that gives the Sinister an immediately recognizable face in traffic. Those are paired with 21-inch Gloss Black aluminum wheels wrapped in all-season tires, keeping the aggressive look practical for year-round use.

Black Accented ST Sinister badging finishes the exterior, marking this as something beyond a standard ST without screaming for attention. Ford describes the overall design language as “custom-inspired” — and that framing is deliberate. The Sinister package is positioned as a factory answer to what ST owners have already been doing in driveways and garages since the Explorer ST launched in 2020.

“Street truck” culture isn’t new, but factory versions wax and wane. The F-150 Lobo joins the Maverick Lobo. And maybe a Bronco Lobo’s coming?

A Free Driving School Comes With It

Alongside the Sinister package, Ford is relaunching the Explorer ST Experience — a complimentary, one-day professional driving instruction program for owners of new 2026 and 2027 Explorer ST vehicles. The program kicks off in fall 2026 and will travel across the United States, pairing owners with expert instructors in a controlled environment to work through performance driving techniques.

Offering a factory driving school alongside a performance package is a genuine differentiator in this segment. Rivals like Hyundai’s Night editions or Toyota’s Nightshade treatments deliver the blacked-out aesthetic buyers want, but they generally stop there. Ford is betting that giving ST owners a structured way to actually use their SUV’s performance capability builds a deeper connection to the brand — and to the ST community specifically.

ST Sales Momentum Is the Real Story Behind This Launch

The Sinister package didn’t arrive in a vacuum. When Ford introduced the Explorer ST in 2020, it accounted for roughly 16% of total Explorer sales — a solid start for a performance variant of a mainstream family SUV. By the 2025 model year, that figure had climbed to nearly 22%, according to Explorer Brand Marketing Manager Travis Pearce, who called it “an accelerating demand for high-performance utilities.”

That kind of volume growth justifies a dedicated sub-variant. The Sinister package is Ford’s way of rewarding the ST community while also giving fence-sitters a more visually distinctive reason to step up from a base Explorer. The blacked-out aesthetic trend has proven durable across the industry — Hyundai’s Night packages and Toyota’s Nightshade lineup have both found consistent buyers — and Ford is now leaning into it with the full weight of the ST performance brand behind it.

The 2027 Explorer ST Sinister is open for orders today. For performance SUV buyers who want a factory-built truck that looks like it just rolled out of a custom shop — without sacrificing warranty coverage or build quality — this package makes a compelling case.

    TopSpeed’s Take

    2027 Ford Explorer Sinister PackageFord

Whether or not it’s your cup of tea, more of these blacked-out aesthetic packages are welcome. We love when automakers play with their color palette and materials to give vehicles a fresh look, as well as something just a little bit rarified as a bonus to their customers. The fact that brands keep giving the Darth Vader treatment to their products shows they must be popular as well. The driving school is the cherry on top of this dark chocolate sundae. You might be surprised how fun the Ford Explorer ST can be on an autocross course.
