    • The 2026 BYD Atto 3 Evo is an updated version of the BYD Atto 3.
    • For 2026, the Atto 3 Evo is now RWD or AWD, while power jumps to 443 horsepower (AWD), more than double the old car.
    • It also gains a frunk for 2026.

Chinese car brands dominate much of the news cycle these days, for good reason. The country quickly went from a laughingstock, producing bad knockoffs for people who didn’t have much money to choose otherwise, to pumping out world-class cars. Its EVs have broadly surpassed Western designs, much to the chagrin of longstanding automakers.

This new crop of “good” Chinese vehicles has been on sale in Western markets for a little longer than you’d think. Thus, it’s time to facelift and update some of the early models. BYD’s Atto 3 (known as the Yuan Plus in many markets) was one of BYD’s first EV models exported. This Hyundai Kona Electric-sized crossover has had modest success, but the brand wants to up the ante for the new model year. For 2026, BYD has thoroughly updated the Atto 3 for European markets, giving it a new name: Atto 3 Evo. This update is significant, as it now has more than double the power it did last year.

Now, I didn’t mind the old Atto 3. I drove one back in 2022, in France. Its compact body, roughly 60 kWh battery, felt more than adequate for what it was. The Atto 3’s 8-second 0-60 time, 204 horsepower output, and 88 kW maximum charging speed were fine for a 2022-era car.

Yet time marches onward, and the standards of the class have continued to increase.

For 2026, the Atto 3 has been updated, much of it going under the skin. The car shifts from a front-wheel-drive design to a rear-motor, RWD design in standard form. In top trim form, the Atto 3 Evo now gains AWD, adding a second motor up front. Also, the revised design now sees the Atto 3 Evo gain a frunk.

The rear-wheel drive Atto 3 Evo’s is now gets 308 horsepower, able to push the car from 0-62 mph in a swift 5.5 seconds. The dual-motor AWD Atto 3 now has a whopping 443 hp, able to snatch the pint-sized crossover to 62 mph in a minuscule 3.9 seconds.

The battery is bigger, too. The old 60 kWh battery has been replaced with a new 75 kWh one, boosting range to 317 miles (510 km) WLTP, up from the 261 miles (420 km) of the old car. Charging speeds are up, too, now hitting 220 kW, and able to do the 10-80 sprint in as little as 25 minutes. This may be in part due to the new 800V electrical architecture used on the Atto 3.

Physically, the Atto 3 Evo looks about the same as it always has. There’s been some streamlining of the car’s interior and exterior elements, as well as a few new color and wheel choices. The biggest notable change may be the charging port. Once on the front passenger fender, the updated Atto 3 Evo now has it on the passenger rear. Pricing has not been announced yet, though.

Now, it’s still a slim-to-none chance that the Atto 3 Evo will likely ever grace American roads (although Canada isn’t out of the question), but this car’s existence proves just how committed Chinese brands are to keeping their cars relevant on the global market. The Atto 3’s sales have been modest outside of China, but it’s fair to see that the specifications of the car were definitely very much mediocre. Now, the Atto 3 Evo update looks to give a small, relatively affordable EV specs that are in line with cars like the Tesla Model Y.

If BYD keeps pricing about the same as the old Atto 3 was, then I predict this new car could be something of a hit.
