Chevy’s Body-On-Frame V8 Wagon Tows, Hauls, And It Costs Less Than A Used Camry

Nowadays, if you’ve got a family and some stuff to haul around, you’re most likely going to spring for some sort of SUV or minivan. In some cases, you might even scoop yourself up a crew-cab pickup truck to handle the workload. However, if you were shopping for a family vehicle in the early to mid-1990s, you’d probably be considering something else, too. That “something else” would have been a Chevrolet Caprice Classic wagon.

Its recipe was simple. Take the B-Body Caprice, slap a wagon body onto it, and keep the rear-drive, V8 powertrain intact. It took advantage of a body-on-frame design, too, so towing heavy loads and hauling heavy stuff wasn’t much of an issue for the Caprice wagon. In reality, the big Chevy was the jack of all trades, combining everyday usability with family practicality, V8 power, ladder-framed robustness, and a healthy dose of stately styling.

The Caprice Wagon Was An Old-School Family SUV Before They Took Over

The Caprice namesake traces its roots back to mid-1965, when Chevrolet introduced it as an upscale trim selection for the Impala. However, by 1966, Chevy decided to transform the Caprice into its own standalone model. That same year, the Caprice wagon rolled onto the scene for the first time, where it stayed until its 1996 axing. That final generation lasted from ’91 to ’96, and went by the informal name of the “bubble Caprice.”

This final, fourth-gen iteration of the Caprice wagon is the one that gives even modern SUVs a pause, even though it’s at least 30 years old at this point. Under its elongated body sits a boxed ladder frame with a separate body sitting on top. It also shared its underpinnings with the Buick Roadmaster and Roadmaster wagon between the 1991 and 1996 model years. So, the old Caprice wagon already has simplicity on its side when compared to most modern SUVs.

Another plus side to the old wagon is its toughness. A body-on-frame makeup means it’s robust in ways that some modern mid-size and full-size SUVs simply aren’t, due to their use of unibody chassis. A ladder-framed wagon can tow and haul more than one with a unibody. Modern crossover SUVs need to undergo quite a lot of complicated engineering in order to get them to tow substantial amounts of weight.

We also can’t forget about its straightforward approach to the powertrain. Under its hood lies one of three engines, depending on which model year is chosen. In 1991 and 1992, a 170-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 was available, and in 1993 a 5.7-liter V8 delivered 180 hp. In 1994, GM made its famous 5.7-liter LT1 V8 available for the model, producing 260 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. Backing up any engine was a 4L60 four-speed automatic transmission, which gained electronic controls in 1994 and was then called the 4L60E.

Its Real Advantage Today Is How Uncomplicated It Is

Sure, the B-Body Caprice wagon is now getting on a bit, and even qualifies for antique vehicle plates in most states. Still, its uncomplicated underpinnings can make it a decent contender in the modern world. After all, crossover SUVs these days don’t boast anywhere near the same mechanical simplicity. As more electronics find their way into modern cars, repair costs keep getting more and more prevalent.

With the Caprice wagon, though, things are quite different in terms of repairs. It’s extremely simple in its mechanical makeup, and most jobs can be completed cheaply by yourself, even if you’ve only got a small amount of DIY knowledge. There’s room under the hood, electronics are relatively few and far between, and its body-on-frame chassis means most underpinnings are easily accessible with just a floor jack and a creeper.

Compounding the appeal of mechanical simplicity is the low cost of parts and the sheer amount of aftermarket support the Caprice wagon enjoys. Not only is the Caprice popular, but the Buick Roadmaster and Roadmaster wagon also use virtually the same components, meaning parts crossover is very likely. Oldsmobile even made a B-Body wagon, the Custom Cruiser, that shares most of its bones with the Caprice and Roadmaster wagons.

Modern SUVs carry numerous complex systems and electronics that can prove unreliable and expensive to fix. For starters, turbocharged four-cylinders have taken hold of the crossover segment, and many of those mills lead overstressed lives, which can lead to premature wear and failure. Couple that with tightly packaged engine bays that make DIY repairs hard, extensive electronics, and a whole host of emissions equipment, and the modern crossover starts to sound like a potential maintenance-cost black hole.

Of course, we can’t sit atop our soapbox and claim the 30-year-old Caprice wagon is going to outlast, say, a brand-new Chevrolet Trax. However, when things go wrong with either, you can bet any mechanic or DIY-er is going to heavily prefer wrenching on the Caprice over the Trax.

    SUV-Sized Utility Without SUV-Sized Money

Now, let’s talk price. As it stands now, a run-of-the-mill Chevy Caprice wagon can potentially be bought for less than a newer used Toyota Camry. Of course, whether you can find one cheaper than a Camry depends heavily on condition, mileage, location, and what the seller is asking. Still, it is possible today.

According to Classic.com, an average fourth-gen Caprice wagon sells for approximately $11,800 on the auction market. The figure includes both Caprice wagons and sedans, since specific figures for the former are largely impossible without dipping into conjecture and forum-post arguments. Individual listings are also going to vary widely, as 30-year-old cars can come in all sorts of conditions, from complete rot-box to showroom-fresh.

According to our Price Trends tool, the fourth-gen Caprice and Caprice wagon ends up being cheaper than a 2015 Toyota Camry. Of course, the argument now becomes “Why would I buy an old Chevy for roughly the same price as an 11-year-old Camry?” To counter that, look at what the Chevy offers. It has an extremely simple mechanical makeup, huge interior space, seating for eight, 5,000 pounds of towing capacity, and a huge boatload of long-distance comfort. You simply cannot get all of that out of a ’15 Camry, no matter how hard you try.

So another question comes up: How much would I have to spend to get everything the Caprice wagon offers in a modern vehicle? Only a few SUVs fit the eight-passenger, 5,000-pound, V8-powered bill, such as the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and the Cadillac Escalade, and all of these beasts cost way more than an $11,000 Caprice wagon. Not to mention, they’re also far more complicated and maybe not even as comfortable.

You May Not Have Long Before The Penny Drops

As time moves forward, and more folks get sick and tired of endlessly complicated modern cars, older 90s and 2000s-era models are becoming increasingly popular. Sure, they’re older, but they still have a mix of things that make them desirable today. On one hand, they were built during a time when electronics and complex engineering hadn’t really taken hold of the market yet. On the other hand, most of them are still new enough to be viable daily drivers.

That’s where the Caprice wagon fits in, albeit on the older end of the scale. Most of its electronics are simple pieces of kit, such as a radio, O2 sensors, and lights. The bulk of the work is mechanical, which makes it much easier to live with when things go right, and when things go wrong, fixing it yourself is much simpler than putting a wrench to your 2024 Lexus RX.

At the end of the day, we can confidently say “buy one now,” but on one condition. The one you’re going to buy should be able to pass a thorough inspection. After all, the Caprice wagon is getting on in age, and sometimes that age brings out unique issues that need to be addressed before a car can be daily-driven. Should your prospective example pass with flying colors, going for it wouldn’t be a bad idea.

So, instead of spending an arm and a leg, along with the emergency fund, on buying some sort of modern crossover SUV, maybe just take a peek at what the old Caprice Wagon has to offer; you’ll likely be surprised. It won’t be maintenance-free, and it’s not magic, but the right one could provide you with more than a modern crossover ever could.
