The Great Han is set to debut any day now as a sibling to BYD’s new flagship electric SUV, the Great Tang. It’s expected to offer an impressive 1,000 km (621 miles) range and fast charging in as little as five minutes.

BYD prepares to launch the flagship Great Han EV sedan

Since introducing its breakthrough Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging system in March, BYD has unleashed a series of new vehicles equipped with the new technology, ranging from electric supercars to some of its most popular SUVs.

At the Beijing Auto Show, we got a sneak peek at a few models, including the Great Tang (Datang in China), a stunning full-size luxury electric SUV.

After opening preorders at the event, BYD said over 30,000 buyers ordered the flagship electric SUV in its first 24 hours on the market. Earlier this month, Lu Tian, general manager of BYD’s Dynasty series, confirmed that the number has now reached over 100,000. And that was just two weeks since preorders opened.

With its official launch set for next month, BYD is quietly preparing to introduce a sedan variant. The Great Han (DaHan in China) was spotted driving in China ahead of its debut with minimal camouflage.

Low-camouflage spy shots of the #BYD DaHan are appearing more often. Likely nearing MIIT filing. Will it appear in next month’s MIIT announcement? https://t.co/zVX8uuQJF2 pic.twitter.com/drtaEioHxI

Like the Great Tang, BYD’s flagship electric sedan is expected to feature its latest Blade Batteries and Flash Charging tech, enabling a slightly longer CLTC range than the big-body SUV, up to around 1,000 km (621 miles).

Recent spy photos of the new model (via ThinkerCar) confirm it will adopt a similar design as the Great Tang with a full-length LED light bar running across the front and smooth, reductive character lines.

The interior is also expected to feature a setup similar to that of the full-size electric SUV, with plenty of digital screens, premium seats, and advanced in-vehicle safety and convenience features.

With the ability to deliver up to 1,500 kW, vehicles equipped with BYD’s new battery and fast charging system can recharge from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes. For a “full recharge,” or going from 10% to 97%, it takes just nine minutes, or about 30% to 50% faster than the average EV.

According to CarNewsChina, presales for the Great Han are expected to open in August, with an official launch in September, as BYD looks to capitalize on seasonal car-buying trends.

We should learn more soon, with the flagship electric sedan expected to appear in China’s MIIT regulatory filings either next month or in July.

The Great Tang is on sale in China with presale prices starting at 250,000 yuan ($36,500). BYD’s new sedan variant will likely be slightly less expensive.
