The Flexible Production Solution Provides Automakers With A Safety Blanket
We look at how Toyota’s new powertrain approach will make navigating the fluctuating preferences of customers and differing markets easier over the coming decade.
Yesterday we said that Toyota was looking at selling its next-generation engines and hybrid systems to the competition. Today, Toyota has revealed much more about one of those new engines. It’s the first time Toyota has designed an engine for electrification from the very start.
Since this is Toyota and it’s all-in on hybrids, naturally it’ll be more fuel efficient than previous powertrains.
Toyota Will Turn Three Into One And This Engine Will Help
After playing with platforms built for electric cars and another set for gas cars, Toyota is planning to merge both platforms into one. It’s becoming common across the industry as EV adoption in a few major markets has been slower than expected. Making both on the same platform is easier said than done, though. At least if you don’t want a vehicle that’s seriously compromised, and so, as part of the effort, Toyota is designing this new 1.5-liter engine to remove some of the challenges.
The new 1.5-liter four-cylinder is the first engine Toyota has designed to be part of a hybrid system from the ground up. That starts with the engine being physically smaller than Toyota’s existing four-cylinders, which makes it easier to put into a chassis designed with a focus on EVs.
Toyota didn’t supply dimensions for the new engine, but it definitely looks small in the photos. The new generation power electronics and motors are smaller than the parts they replace as well, and were designed alongside the engine to help optimize every part of the system.
How Many Ways Can A New Engine Improve Efficiency?

The changes aren’t just about size; they’re also about efficiency. Toyota claims the new system will offer 15% better fuel economy than the 1.8 and 1.5-liter hybrid systems it offers now. Much of that comes from reduced friction and better thermal management in the new design, but some even comes from the reduced drag the lower-profile system allows.
Yes, changing the engine can improve aerodynamic efficiency. It can also give the stylists more flexibility. Toyota says that it will allow for lower hood heights. That’s good for visibility, but it also lets the designers give the vehicles a more aggressive front-end design. And since Toyota will build EV, PHEV, and hybrids on the same platform, it will be able to spread out development costs and save money. This isn’t anything new – several Stellantis platforms are capable of the same – but it is still important.
One other big benefit of the flexible platform is flexible production. Essentially, it lets an automaker flip a switch to make more of the type of car the market wants. Adding EVs in a hurry if buyers swing that way, or ramping up hybrids if that’s the current winner, can make Toyota flexible enough to meet whatever demand there is.
The Flexible Production Solution Provides Automakers With A Safety Blanket
The last decade or so has seen incredible growth and development within the auto industry, and it’s been an incredibly difficult period of time for many automakers to navigate. Brands like Toyota which took a more reserved approach to electrification were criticized heavily for not welcoming all-electric tech with wide open arms immediately, while those that did embrace the EV revolution, like Porsche and Lotus, paid dearly for such an approach when customer demand simply wasn’t as high as previously anticipated. Treading that middle line was incredibly difficult to both predict and execute, which is why Toyota’s multi-pathway approach makes perfect sense.
By creating powertrains and new models which have been designed to be fluid from day one will enable Toyota to tweak its direction with relative ease and minimize financial outlay as time progresses, which means it can easier stay in vogue as buying behaviors switch, or as it targets different markets.

If you’re a fan of gas, it’s good to see Toyota investing in new combustion engines, even if it’s not a surprise. Toyota’s hybrids have been able to out-efficiency the competition with less optimized engines for decades, and this new system could launch the brand forward in a way we haven’t seen since the original Prius.
Toyota hasn’t said when the new engine will launch, but don’t expect it to be very far away.
