It’s a wild time for retro gaming. Thanks to decompilations and recompilations of classic titles, those games are becoming unshackled from their proprietary code and original hardware to be ported to new devices or updated in ways to completely change the original game. Ever imagined skateboarding in Call of Duty? Or playing the original Halo right in your web browser, complete with multiplayer? These are unofficial versions of games, so they may sit in a legal gray area. It seems unlikely that Nintendo, for example, is particularly happy about people finding ways to play The Legend of Zelda on non-Nintendo hardware.…
The Drive 🤝 your inbox. Every weekday The Daily Brief wraps up the biggest stories and our exclusive reporting on the auto industry and car culture. What happens when you take a “frontier” (read: general-purpose) AI model like Claude or GPT and ask it to get behind the wheel and drive a car? Sure, some self-driving systems utilize artificial intelligence in one sense or another, but they’re specifically built for the task. Researchers wanted to see how well your typical AI agent handles the task of driving, via Comma vision hardware and OpenPilot. The results surely won’t leave anyone racing…
Automotive For years, the automotive industry has treated the traditional sedan as if it were headed for extinction, pushed aside by an endless wave of SUVs, crossovers, and pickup trucks. That obituary may have been written a little too early. U.S. sales data through the first nine months of 2026 show passenger cars gaining meaningful ground, with Honda and Toyota standing out in particular. Honda’s passenger-car lineup has enjoyed especially strong momentum, and the company recently recorded its best third-quarter passenger-car performance since 2020. SUVs and trucks still dominate the overall market, but buyers appear to be rediscovering…
That’s a nicer name than ‘stalker mode.’ Below the Sky/Shutterstock Instagram is internally developing a possible new feature that seems tailor-made to allow for nefarious behavior. Leaker and reverse engineer Alessando Paluzzi posted on X with the discovery of an Instagram feature billed as “read-only mode.” According to the uncovered screenshots, this option allows for a session where “you can’t like, comment, message, follow or view stories” on the social network, which would allow a user to browse the platform without leaving any type of paper trail about what they were viewing. It appears to be…

The British engineering experts at Lanzante have revealed the results of their hard work on the forthcoming 95-59 supercar. Based on the McLaren 750S but modified with totally new bodywork and a three-seat cabin with the driver in the middle, the 95-59 will also receive a bold HDK package – for “high-downforce kit” – that makes it even wilder than the 1995 McLaren F1 GTR that it pays homage to. There’s a lot that separates the HDK from the “regular” 95-59, with revisions from top to bottom and stem to stern, making this one of Lanzante’s most audacious designs yet.…

The recent trend toward ruggedized crossovers will claim yet another victory in the form of an off-road special edition of the Mini Countryman. The automaker teased the new version of the compact SUV on Facebook today by way of a blurred image, perhaps of the Countryman traversing a rock-strewn stream or snowy glacier. The biggest Mini – which is still pretty small by modern standards – also looks like it gets some trim-specific equipment to help it survive off the beaten path. Although details are scarce at the moment, we won’t have to wait long to learn more, as the…
The Drive 🤝 your inbox. Every weekday The Daily Brief wraps up the biggest stories and our exclusive reporting on the auto industry and car culture. Statistically speaking, you probably don’t drive a diesel. Oil burners represent a tiny chunk of light-duty vehicle sales, even when you factor in heavy-duty pickups and the like. But in the freight world, if you’re hauling heavy loads, chances are you’re fueling up with diesel—or maybe you were, if you drove for one of the 16 trucking companies that went bankrupt last quarter. According to multiple sources, the rising cost of diesel fuel was…
