    Automotive

For years, the automotive industry has treated the traditional sedan as if it were headed for extinction, pushed aside by an endless wave of SUVs, crossovers, and pickup trucks. That obituary may have been written a little too early. U.S. sales data through the first nine months of 2026 show passenger cars gaining meaningful ground, with Honda and Toyota standing out in particular. Honda’s passenger-car lineup has enjoyed especially strong momentum, and the company recently recorded its best third-quarter passenger-car performance since 2020. SUVs and trucks still dominate the overall market, but buyers appear to be rediscovering something sedans have offered all along: lower prices, strong fuel economy, and plenty of practicality without paying for more vehicle than they really need.

Some of America’s most familiar nameplates are leading the charge. Toyota Camry sales climbed 11.2 percent through the first three quarters to 260,684 vehicles, while the Honda Accord jumped an impressive 32.7 percent to 145,520 units. The compact class is holding its own as well, with the Toyota Corolla reaching 195,141 sales, an 8.4 percent increase, while the Honda Civic climbed 5.4 percent to 195,135 units. Those are not tiny niche-market numbers. They show that hundreds of thousands of buyers are still perfectly happy choosing a conventional car when the combination of price, efficiency, comfort, and reliability makes sense.

The rebound stretches beyond Honda and Toyota. Hyundai’s Elantra has posted gains even as it approaches the end of its current generation, while the Hyundai Sonata and Kia K5 have also enjoyed double-digit growth. Mazda has seen a sizable increase for the Mazda3, and the trend has even reached the luxury market, where models including the BMW 3 Series, Lexus IS, and Acura Integra have recorded strong year-over-year improvements. Not every automaker is sharing in the resurgence, however. Nissan’s passenger-car business has struggled, with both the Sentra and outgoing Altima moving in the opposite direction even as the brand’s SUV and truck sales have improved.

Affordability may be the biggest force working in the sedan’s favor. New vehicle prices remain painfully high for many households, and buyers looking to keep monthly payments under control are discovering that sedans often deliver more value for the money. A Honda Civic or Accord can still be purchased with a starting price below $30,000, while stepping into a comparable compact SUV can easily push the price several thousand dollars higher. Fuel economy strengthens the argument. Hybrid versions of the Civic and Accord can return more than 48 mpg combined, giving buyers a meaningful advantage at the pump without requiring them to make the jump to a fully electric vehicle.

None of this means Americans are suddenly abandoning SUVs. Honda’s CR-V remains enormously popular, Toyota continues to sell huge numbers of RAV4s, and trucks and crossovers will almost certainly remain the largest pieces of the U.S. new-vehicle market. What is changing is the idea that buyers no longer want cars simply because they sit lower to the ground and have a trunk. As vehicle prices rise and consumers become increasingly conscious of fuel costs, the humble sedan suddenly looks pretty smart again. If these sales trends carry through the fourth quarter and into 2027, automakers that resisted the temptation to abandon passenger cars altogether may find themselves in a surprisingly good position.
