Just when many enthusiasts had accepted that the Audi R8 was gone for good, Audi has revealed something even more ambitious. Meet the all-new Audi Nuvolari, a limited-production hybrid supercar that takes inspiration from the brand’s racing heritage while showcasing what happens when Audi’s engineers are given complete creative freedom. Rather than serving as a direct replacement for the R8, the Nuvolari arrives as a technological and performance showcase unlike anything the German automaker has ever produced.

Named after legendary Italian racing driver Tazio Nuvolari, whose accomplishments behind the wheel of Auto Union race cars helped shape Audi’s motorsport legacy, the new halo car abandons Audi’s traditional naming strategy in favor of something far more emotional. The Nuvolari is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 borrowed from Lamborghini’s Temerario, but Audi takes things further by adding three electric motors to create a staggering combined output of 987 horsepower. The V8 alone contributes 789 horsepower and screams all the way to a remarkable 10,000-rpm redline.

Performance figures are every bit as dramatic as the specifications suggest. Audi claims the Nuvolari can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.6 seconds and continue to a top speed exceeding 217 mph. Even more impressive is how quickly the car builds speed beyond typical supercar benchmarks, with Audi estimating a run to 124 mph in only 6.8 seconds. Those figures place the Nuvolari firmly among the fastest road-going vehicles the company has ever created.

Exclusivity is another major part of the package. Audi plans to build only 499 examples worldwide, making it significantly rarer than most modern supercars. With a starting price equivalent to roughly $686,000, the Nuvolari is aimed at collectors and enthusiasts seeking something truly special. Unlike many ultra-limited exotic cars that are spoken for before they’re revealed, Audi’s newest masterpiece initially remains available, though that situation may not last long.

The engineering underneath the carbon fiber bodywork is equally fascinating. For the first time in Audi history, an entire production vehicle body is constructed from carbon fiber, while forged center-lock wheels make another brand first. Advanced aerodynamic elements including an S-duct front end and active rear wing generate up to 882 pounds of downforce. Audi’s sophisticated “quattro predictive ride” system coordinates the suspension, stability control, traction control, aerodynamics, and powertrain management to maximize performance in virtually every situation.

While outright speed is a central focus, Audi also designed the Nuvolari with serious track capability in mind. Drivers can select from multiple operating modes including Balanced, Dynamic, Dynamic Plus, and a dedicated Track setting with Wet, Dry, Race, and traction-control-off calibrations. Massive Bridgestone Potenza Race tires and carbon ceramic brakes complete the package, with Audi boldly claiming stopping performance comparable to that of a modern Formula 1 car.

Beyond the numbers, the Nuvolari stands out through countless design details that reveal the obsessive attention paid by Audi’s skunkworks-style development team. Hidden air intakes are integrated into the doors, the rear wing features actual metal Audi rings embedded into milled carbon fiber, and nearly every metallic-looking surface is genuine metal. Buyers can choose either painted carbon fiber or exposed carbon bodywork, further emphasizing the car’s handcrafted nature.

Inside, the Nuvolari feels more like a road-legal concept car than a traditional production vehicle. Functional physical controls replace touch-sensitive gimmicks, a camera-based rearview mirror compensates for the lack of a rear window, and practicality takes a back seat to performance-focused design. There are no cupholders, minimal storage, and few compromises made in the pursuit of creating something truly extraordinary. The result is a machine that represents Audi at its absolute peak, proving the brand is still capable of surprising the automotive world when it decides to break its own rules.
