It may be hard to believe, but the Porsche Taycan, the automaker’s very first mass-produced electric car, is actually getting rather old. Its first model year was 2020, meaning the 2027 model will be the eighth year of the sports sedan. Porsche has worked hard to keep the Taycan relevant, though, adding loads of models, a wagon body style, and high-performance upgrades. This newest model is no different, adding more battery capacity for entry-level models, fresh infotainment, and a feature pioneered by none other than Hyundai.

Porsche Jumps On The Simulated Transmission Bandwagon

When the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N launched with the ability to shift through fake gears, complete with a fake tachometer, we never would’ve guessed that it would become a nearly requisite feature on performance-oriented EVs and hybrids. Kia and Genesis added it to their quick EVs based on the Ioniq 5 N platform, Honda added it to the Prelude, BMW will include it on the i3M, and now Porsche is adding it to the Taycan. Like in the Hyundai group products, the Taycan system simulates an eight-speed automatic transmission, and can be operated in either automatic or manual modes. A tachometer appears on the screen with a “gear” indicator, and the acceleration noises pumped through the sound system will mirror the rise of the “revs.”

Interestingly, though, this feature is not standard except on the Turbo GT. In all other Taycans, the simulated transmission feature, called “E-Shift,” is an extra-cost option that adds a different steering wheel with paddles and a switch for engaging the system. Porsche hasn’t said how much E-Shift costs to add.

Base Taycan Gets The Big Battery

A bigger change to the lineup, literally, is that Porsche is making the larger 105-kWh battery called “Performance Battery Plus” a standard feature on the base Taycan, Taycan 4, and Taycan 4S. Through the 2026 model year, those three models have had an 89-kWh battery pack, with the bigger one as an option. Porsche hasn’t given exact range figures, but since both batteries have been available, we can give a good estimate. On the small battery, these Taycans had ranges of between 251 miles (for the Taycan 4) to 271 (for the Taycan). Those ranges rose to 294 miles on the low end (Taycan 4) and 318 on the high end (Taycan) with the big battery.

Additionally, charging should be easier and potentially faster. Porsche already added compatibility for plug-and-charge, even at Tesla stations, and for the 2027 model year it’s giving the Taycan a NACS fast-charging port. The new port is now on the front passenger-side fender, which will make it easy to park and use the somewhat short Tesla charging station cables. Like on a Nissan Leaf, the Taycan will still have a J1772 port just for AC charging, and it’s still located on the driver-side fender like on previous Taycans. Porsche claims charging speeds have been improved, though it hasn’t given an estimated time for charging at a DC fast charger. Porsche further includes a CCS-to-NACS adapter so that you won’t have trouble with any charging station.

A Few Other Odds And Ends Come With The New Model Year

The other changes to the Taycan are less dramatic. Porsche upgraded the hardware for the infotainment and updated the operating system to the version found in the Macan and Cayenne EVs. The system has new graphics and interfaces, an “AI-supported” voice assistant, and the ability to download a variety of apps, including media ones, to the system. Another convenience feature added is a more powerful wireless charging pad.

It’s Official: Porsche And Manthey Are Addicted To Setting Lap Records

A Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach package and some choice Manthey modifications just took the production electric car lap record at the Nürburgring.

Finally, this year the Manthey performance upgrade for the Taycan Turbo GT Weissach will be available. Porsche previewed this last month along with a new Nürburgring record. The package adds wider fender flares for wider wheels and tires, many aerodynamic upgrades, plus even more horsepower and torque. Pricing for the package still hasn’t been announced yet.

You Can Order One Right Now

On the topic of pricing, the base Taycan will now start at $111,900, or $114,250 with the $2,350 destination charge. That’s $6,100 more than the 2026 model with the smaller battery. Comparing versions with the same battery, the new model is just $10 more expensive, and it includes the updated charging ports and infotainment system. We expect price increases to be similarly minimal across the line. If you’re interested, Porsche is taking orders now, and deliveries will arrive this fall.

Porsche Taycan Could Disappear After Only One Generation

There might not be room (or money) for two sedans anymore.

CarBuzz Insight – Why This Matters:

Between the development of the Manthey performance upgrade and generally staying on top of meaningful updates for the Taycan, it seems clear that even if Porsche is rethinking its EV plans, it’s not giving up on them completely. Although, another factor could be keeping the model relevant while it sorts out its plans for its sedan line. The Panamera is due for a replacement, and the company will need to decide whether it retains it as a unique model, or whether the two lines will converge into one. It’s one of many difficult decisions facing the brand as it figures out how to handle plummetting sales and skyrocketing EV development costs.
